About

Beautifully hand-colored original engraving from the German compendium of spices and plants engraved by Matthaeus Merian and published in 1719, Des vollstaendigen und Reformierten Kraeuter Buchs, Das XIV. Kapitel. Von dem Thymian. Matthaeus Merian (1593-1650) was famous for his publications "Topographies" and his "Theatrum Europeum". He was also a very distinguished engraver and publisher of many books and prints, including cartographic atlases and city views. Thyme is an aromatic perennial evergreen. It hails from the mint family, is a relative of oregano, and has dietary, medicinal, and ornamental uses. People have used thyme throughout history for embalming and as a source of a naturally occurring class of compounds known as biocides known to destroy harmful organisms, including infectious bacteria. Ancient Egyptians used thyme as an embalming fluid. In ancient Greece, thyme excelled as a temple incense and a bathwater fragrance. The Romans used it to flavor cheese and alcoholic beverages, also as a cure for melancholy and shyness. In the Middle Ages, thyme was placed beneath pillows to aid sleep and ward off nightmares. Women gave thyme leaves to knights and warriors to instill courage. As incense it was put on coffins to promote successful passage into the afterlife. Image size: 4.75 x 4.13, freshly matted left, right, and top border in an acid-free, 3-inch wide, ivory mat; 3.5-inch wide on bottom. Ready to frame. Outside mat size 12 x 10.63 inches
