Church at Chichicastenango
By Jesse F. Reed
Located in Myrtle Beach, SC
Jesse F. Reed, 'Church at Chichicastenango', color etching and aquatint, 1963. Signed and titled in pencil. Signed and dated in the plate, lower right. A fine, richly-inked impression, with fresh colors, on cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (1 3/8 to 2 1/2 inches), in excellent condition. Chichicastenango, also known as Santo Tomás Chichicastenango, is a town in the El Quiché department of Guatemala, located in a mountainous region about 140 km northwest of Guatemala City. Chichicastenango is a K'iche' Maya cultural center, with the great majority of the municipality's population indigenous Mayan K'iche. The church depicted is the 400-year-old church Iglesia de Santo Tomás. Built atop a Pre-Columbian temple platform, the steps which remain venerated today, originally led to a temple of the pre-Hispanic Maya civilization. K'iche' Maya priests still use the church for their rituals, burning incense and candles. Each of the 18 stairs that lead up to the church stands for one month of the Maya calendar year. ABOUT THE ARTIST Jesse Floyd Reed (1920-2011) studied art in New York City at the Grand Central School of Art and the Art Students’ League. He held degrees in History and English and completed special advance studies in Asian, African, and Latin American art, history and culture. At the time of his retirement, he was a Professor of the Arts Emeritus at Davis & Elkins College, a position he held for over forty-nine years. A nationally recognized artist since 1947, Professor Reed’s art has been shown in hundreds of museums, libraries, colleges, and universities, including the Boston Museum, National Museum, The Library of Congress, Brooklyn Museum, and Seattle Museum. In his native West Virginia, he is represented in the permanent collections of the Huntington Museum and the Charleston Museum at Sunrise. The recipient of many national and regional awards, Reed was a member of the Salmagundi Club in NY, the Boston Printmakers, the Print Club of Albany, and was a founding member of the West Virginia Water...

Marc Chagall, Tribe of Gad, from The Jerusalem Windows, 1962 (after)
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph after Marc Chagall (1887–1985), titled Tribe of Gad, from the album Marc Chagall, The Jerusalem Windows, originates from the 1962 edition published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, June 7, 1962. This magnificent composition reflects Chagall’s profound engagement with the spiritual and symbolic language of the Hebrew Bible, celebrating the Tribe of Gad as an embodiment of courage, strength, and divine protection. Tribe of Gad radiates with Chagall’s signature dreamlike palette—deep blues, glowing yellows, and translucent reds—creating an atmosphere of sacred harmony and lyrical movement. The work exemplifies the artist’s ability to merge ancient narratives with modern visual poetry, transforming his spiritual reflections into radiant visions of light and color that transcend time and tradition. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 15 x 11 inches (38.1 x 27.94 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaboration with the most important modern artists of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: After Marc Chagall (1887–1985) Title: Tribe of Gad, from Marc Chagall, The Jerusalem Windows Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 15 x 11 inches (38.1 x 27.94 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1962 Publisher: Andre Sauret, Editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the album Marc Chagall, The Jerusalem Windows, published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Paris, June 7, 1962 Notes: Excerpted from the album, This album, which was compiled by Andre Sauret, was completed on June 7, 1962. The texts by Jean Leymarie were composed by hand in "Romain du roi" and were printed by The Imprimerie Nationale de France. The thirty-six preparatory color designs, some of which are in twenty colors, were transferred to the stones by Charles Sorlier under the direction of Marc Chagall. These designs and the two original lithographs by Marc Chagall were printed by Mourlot Freres. The other reproductions and the binding are by Draeger Freres. About the Publication: Marc Chagall, The Jerusalem Windows (Les Vitraux de Jerusalem), published in 1962 by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Paris, stands as one of the artist’s most celebrated illustrated albums and a cornerstone of modern printmaking. The publication documents Chagall’s monumental stained-glass windows created for the synagogue of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem—an artistic and spiritual masterpiece dedicated to the twelve tribes of Israel. Conceived in collaboration with master printer Charles Sorlier and the renowned Mourlot Freres atelier, the album compiles the artist’s original color studies through vibrant lithography, achieving a remarkable luminosity that mirrors the glowing transparency of stained glass. The accompanying text by art historian Jean Leymarie offers profound insights into Chagall’s vision, faith, and symbolism. Completed on June 7, 1962, this edition embodies the union of fine art, craftsmanship, and devotion, capturing the transcendent beauty of Chagall’s windows and their universal message of peace and faith. About the Artist: Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Belarus-born French painter, printmaker, and designer whose visionary imagination, radiant color, and deeply poetic symbolism made him one of the most beloved and influential artists of the 20th century. Rooted in the imagery of his Jewish heritage and the memories of his childhood in Vitebsk, Chagall’s art wove together themes of faith, love, folklore, and fantasy with a dreamlike modern sensibility. His unique style—merging elements of Cubism, Fauvism, Expressionism, and Surrealism—defied categorization, transforming ordinary scenes into lyrical meditations on memory and emotion. Influenced by Russian icon painting, medieval religious art, and the modern innovations of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque, Chagall developed a profoundly personal visual language filled with floating figures, vibrant animals, musicians, and lovers that symbolized the transcendent power of imagination and love. During his early years in Paris, he became an integral part of the Ecole de Paris circle, forming friendships with Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Leger, and Sonia Delaunay, and his creative spirit resonated with that of his peers and successors—Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like Chagall, sought to push the boundaries of perception, emotion, and form. Over a prolific career that spanned painting, printmaking, stained glass, ceramics, and stage design, Chagall brought an unparalleled poetic sensibility to modern art, infusing even the most abstract subjects with human warmth and spiritual depth. His works are held in the most prestigious museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate, and the Guggenheim, where they continue to inspire generations of artists and collectors. The highest price ever paid for a Marc Chagall artwork is approximately $28.5 million USD, achieved in 2017 at Sotheby’s New York for Les Amoureux (1928). “Tending the Sheep”
Located in Southampton, NY
Beautifully executed original hand colored lithograph using gouache and watercolor. Scene in Surrey, England. Signedxwith monogram in plate lower left, Myles Birket Foster. Published by M. H. Long. Condition is very good. In original 2 inch wide birdseye maple antique frame with thick museum mat with gold innner edge. Overall 22 by 26 inches. Biography Myles Birket Foster (4 February 1825 – 27 March 1899) was a popular English illustrator, watercolour artist and engraver in the Victorian period. His name is also to be found as Myles Birkett Foster. Life and work Foster was born in North Shields, England of a primarily Quaker family, but his family moved south to London in 1830, where his father founded M. B. Foster & sons — a successful beer-bottling company. He was schooled at Hitchin, Hertfordshire and on leaving initially went into his father's business. However, noticing his talent for art, his father secured an apprenticeship with the notable wood engraver, Ebenezer Landells, where he worked on illustrations for Punch magazine and the Illustrated London News. On leaving Landells' employ, he continued to produce work for the Illustrated London News and the Illustrated London Almanack. He also found work as a book illustrator and, during the 1850s, trained himself to paint in watercolours. His illustrations of Longfellow’s Evangeline and books of poetry by other contemporaries were a great success, and he quickly became a successful artist in watercolours. Birket Foster became an Associate of the "Old" Watercolour Society (Later the Royal Watercolour Society) in 1860 and exhibited some 400 of his paintings at the Royal Academy over more than 2 decades. Birket Foster travelled widely, painting the countryside around Scotland, the Rhine Valley, the Swiss lakes and in Italy, especially Venice. In 1863 he moved to Witley, near Godalming in Surrey where he had a house ("The Hill") built. Being friendly with Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris, he had the house decorated and furnished in contemporary style, with tiles and paintings by Burne-Jones and Morris' firm, Morris and Company. The same year he published a volume of "English Landscapes," with text by Tom Taylor...

Conversation
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Conversation" 1988 is a color lithograph on Arches paper by noted Italian/Argentinian artist Aldo Luongo, b.1941. It is hand signed and numbered 103/275 in pencil by the artist. The image size is 20 x 25 inches, sheet size is 25 x 29 inches. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Aldo Luongo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, of Italian heritage. Since as far back as he can remember, Luongo had two great passions: art and soccer. Shortly after his graduation from the Academy of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Luongo came to the U.S. to play professional soccer for the New York Generals. After his athletic career was cut short due to an injury, he arrived in New York City with a dream to pursue his artwork full time. In the 70’s, he had his first major success with multiple reproductions of his black & white drawings. Not only were these prints released to great critical acclaim, they were a huge commercial success as well (hundreds of thousands of pieces sold within several years). Aldo had put himself on the map as a major international artist. Aldo Luongo has continued his reign at the top of the contemporary art world for almost four decades – a distinction that puts him in a class of his own. He has received numerous awards and honors, including being named a 3-time official Olympic Artist (Summer 1988, Summer 1996, and Winter 2002); an official World Cup Artist (1998); an official U.S. Women’s World Cup Artist (1999); and the 1999 Sports Artist of the Year (U.S. Sports Museum). He also has twice been chosen to paint eggs for the White House Easter Egg Hunt which now reside in the Smithsonian Institute. "Home from the Fair" Wagon and Horses Print on Canvas
Located in Soquel, CA
"Home from the Fair" Wagon and Horses Print on Canvas Colorful print on canvas with additional oil brush strokes for detail by Texas artist Jack Terry (American, Born 1952). Limited hand signed edition of 108/250 hand embellished canvas prints. Hand signed in gold pen lower right "Jack Terry 108/250" Also signed in print "Jack Terry 1988" Ink Stamp on Canvas "Jack Terry hand Painted Canvas Print" Brass plaque center on linen "Home From the Fair" Image, 16"H x 20"W Frame, 24"H x 28"W x 2.5"D Jack Terry’s paintings evoke emotion in the viewer encompassing subject matter, use of color, mood and grace of light. He is one of the most collected artists of our time. Jack was born in the west Texas town of Sweetwater in 1952 and began his art career as a young child, winning his first of many awards at the age of nine. A fourth-generation Texan, he credits much of his inspiration to his maternal Grandfather, Bill Mason, a rancher who cowboyed on some of the last cattle drives of the west and his paternal Grandmother, Etna Terry, who began painting late in life and welcomed young Jack to participate in the fun. Six-time world champion Cowboy Larry Mahan has said of Jack, “Terry captures the West the way it was and the way it should be. He is one of the finest artists of our day and a pretty good cowhand to boot…”. A graduate of the University of Texas, Jack studied studio art, anatomy, design and journalism while displaying his paintings in various galleries throughout the state. Upon graduation, he began painting full-time, taking every opportunity to day-work on various ranches in search of inspiration, new subject matter and authenticity. In 1976, at the young age of 24, Jack Terry was named Bicentennial Artist in Texas. He was honored with a one-man show in the state Capitol Rotunda. His portrait of President Lyndon Johnson was commissioned for publication on the Texas Bicentennial Calendar that same year. In 1999, Harvest House Publishers invited Jack to write and illustrate his first book. “The Great Trail Ride”, a collection of 14 inspirational short stories. The great success of that first title led to eight more books which sold over one million copies. In 2008 First Lady Laura Bush invited Jack to the White House for the Holiday Celebration. He painted a Christmas tree ornament representing the state of Texas. In 2010 the United States Army commissioned a painting honoring the First Air Calvary Division and the brave men and women who have served from the historic beginning of the U.S. Calvary, Viet Nam and the Middle East. Limited edition reproductions were signed by Jack, Medal of Honor Recipient Bruce Crandall from the Viet Nam War, and General Dick Cody, Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Army. Jack responded about this special occasion in 2010, “After months of research, flying time and researching films and most importantly sitting at the same table with these heroes whose commitment, loyalty and sacrifice to our great nation have made this the most meaningful painting I have ever done”. Jack Terry’s paintings hang in prominent collections throughout the country. The King Ranch...

Marc Chagall, Tribe of Issachar, from The Jerusalem Windows, 1962 (after)
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph after Marc Chagall (1887–1985), titled Tribe of Issachar, from the album Marc Chagall, The Jerusalem Windows, originates from the 1962 edition published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, June 7, 1962. This radiant composition celebrates the Tribe of Issachar, symbolizing wisdom, study, and spiritual insight. Tribe of Issachar reflects Chagall’s deep reverence for divine knowledge and the harmony between the earthly and celestial realms. Through an ethereal interplay of blues, greens, and golden light, the artist evokes the serene beauty of enlightenment and the eternal rhythm of faith. The imagery, both symbolic and lyrical, transforms biblical tradition into an expression of spiritual unity and human aspiration, hallmarks of Chagall’s poetic vision. Artwork Details: Artist: After Marc Chagall (1887–1985) Title: Tribe of Issachar, from Marc Chagall, The Jerusalem Windows Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 15 x 11 inches (38.1 x 27.94 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1962 Publisher: Andre Sauret, Editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the album Marc Chagall, The Jerusalem Windows, published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Paris, June 7, 1962 Notes: Excerpted from the album, This album, which was compiled by Andre Sauret, was completed on June 7, 1962.
