About the Item

Wolf Kahn (1927-2020) was a German-born American artist acclaimed for his powerful landscapes, which masterfully combine elements of natural realism with the celebration of color embraced by the Color Field artists. His luminous, lyrical paintings of forests and farmland combined realism with the immediacy of Abstract Expressionism. Working intuitively, Kahn refused to overthink any psychological underpinnings in his paintings. His landscapes, while grounded in the familiar, seem to exist beyond the realm of reality. This screenprint was made to commemorate the 2003 Mostly Mozart Festival at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York. A periwinkle barn fades into a similarly-colored sky, sitting atop a yellow-green hill with a pink foreground. There is a shadowy forsythia bush in the right of the frame, rendered with frenetic brown lines and bright petals. The image showcases Kahn's ability to capture landscapes with vibrant hues and atmospheric depth. His color choices enliven the scene, resulting in an otherworldly atmosphere that teeters between abstraction and representation. This enchanting, peaceful screenprint offers an opportunity for collectors to add a signature Kahn motif (the barn) to their collection. Today, Kahn's work is celebrated in museums across the globe, including the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), The Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), the Hirshorn Museum and the Smithsonian (Washington, DC), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Art and Industry (Hamburg), among others. Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting and patriotic images have independently earned their place in museums across the country. Pachter’s artworks, and unique version of Pop Art, have confirmed his position in the canon of 20th century Canadian art. Pachter’s most cherished images take archetypes of Canadiana -- the barn, Queen Elizabeth, and the moose, -- and depict them with a distinct style, a fresh palette (and often through a humorous lens). “Mini Blue Barn...

House and Barn, Oil Painting
By Brian McCarty

Artist Comments
Artist Brian McCarty depicts a quiet rural home behind a red barn. Surrounded by a field of grass and autumnal trees, a car sits on the winding dirt path. "Everyday life is caught in a moment," says Brian. "Arriving home, or getting ready to leave home. A lazy afternoon." Just the type of subject Brian loves to paint.

About the Artist
Artist Brian McCarty paints idyllic landscapes and bucolic architecture. “Growing up in rural New Jersey, I’ve always found old houses, barns, and the countryside interesting subjects,” says Brian. Influenced by his mom who was a self-taught artist and art teacher, she encouraged Brian to pursue anything artistic. After graduating from Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art and earning his BA in Art from Thomas Edison State College, he worked professionally as a graphic designer in New York for the largest publishing houses in the country. A career that spanned thirty-six years. Brian has done comedy and sketch writing with the Groundling Theater, and worked in a few major feature films as an actor. To begin his process, Brian takes photos of his references with an iPad, crops the images to his liking, and paints directly on his canvas with a quick oil wash. Recently returning to painting full time, he converted a room in his house into a working studio. “I get lots of natural light, and listen to music and podcasts while I paint.”

Helmut Gransow Landscape w/House & Barn "Springtime Reflections No. I"
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY “Springtown Reflections No. I” depicts the moment of change in the weather moving from harsh winter to the first warming days of spring melting the snow. The title suggests a moment to pause in farm life before the coming spring planting and also suggests a time of mental reflection on life and work. The puddles of melting snow reflect the buildings in the scene. The muted colors and slightly off kilter structures cause the buildings to appear worn but sturdy, a soft idyllic scene of rural life.
