This is a hand-colored aquatint and engraving entitled "Pool of Bethesda, Jerusalem", published in London by R. Bowyer in 1804. The print was created by Thomas Milton (1743-1827) from drawings by Luigi Mayer.
This beautiful, detailed, original engraving is printed on deluxe J. Whatman paper with very wide left and right margins. There is a watermark "1801" indicating the year the paper was made. The sheet measures 11.25" high and 16" wide. There is a small faint spot in the upper margin on the left and a tiny faint spot in the right upper corner and another in the left lower corner. The engraving is otherwise in excellent condition with vibrant colors throughout the image.

Painter and printmaker, born Falkirk, Scotland. She studied at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art, 1949-54. In 1954 she was awarded a Carnegie Travelling Scholarship and visited Yugoslavia, Greece and Italy and was much influenced by Byzantine architecture and mosaics. In 1956 she married the painter John Houston with whom she has since travelled widely. Flowers, cats and small objects are often arranged perpendicularly across the paper or canvas.
Elected RSW in 1960, an Associate of the RSA 1963, an Associate of the RA 1971, RSA 1972 and RA 1976, she is the first woman to be elected both RA and RSA. Blackadder has exhibited at the Mercury Gallery, London, Marjorie Parr Gallery and abroad and is a member of the Scottish Arts Club. Her work is represented in Aberdeen University, Bolton Art Gallery, Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, City Arts Centre, Edinburgh, Fleming Collection, Glasgow Print Studio, Gracefield Arts Centre, New Hall College, Cambridge, Otter Gallery, Reading Art...

First invented in the 1500s, etching is a way of incising lines in a metal plate by first drawing on an acid-resistant coating, or ground, to reveal the metal beneath. The plate is then submerged in acid, which “bites” the lines into the metal plate. The ground is then removed and the plate inked for pressing. Etched lines tend to reveal the movement of the artist’s hand more than a technique like engraving, since the image is created on a softer ground.
“People often ask me what types of prints they should collect — etchings or woodcuts or linocuts or silkscreens or lithographs or whatever,” explains Ryan Cross, associate director of Boston’s Barbara Krakow Gallery. “But it’s really more how the artist used those processes and what he or she was trying to express through the medium.”
