Bateman (1887 - 1970) Don’t be Fuel-ish (The Man Who Wasted Power) Original vintage poster 38 x 26 cm Printed for HMSO by Chromoworks for the Ministry of Fuel & Power. HM Bateman was famous for his series of "The Man Who..." cartoons which feature comically exaggerated reactions to social gaffes - think "The boy who breathed on the glass at the British Museum", or "The man who lit his cigar before the loyal toast." He produced comic pictures telling stories from a young age and by the age of fourteen had decided to follow drawing as a profession. His first solo exhibition at the Brook Street Gallery, Mayfair was in 1901 - at the age of fourteen - and his first contract just two years later for twelve pictures in a monthly magazine called "The Royal." Later commissions included those for Punch, The Tatler, Pearson's Weekly, and many more. This particular series of cartoons continues the "The man who" series, but instead of minor social gaffes they illustrate careless actions which might impact the Home Front war effort.
