About the Item

Jack Bush (1909-1977) is best known as one of Canada’s most successful abstract artists of the 20th century. Beginning in the 1960's he achieved international recognition for his works that were on par with the leading American artists associated with color-field painting. A graduate of Toronto’s OCAD (Ontario College of Art and Design), and a key member of the Painters Eleven, Bush was also hugely influential on the developing art scene of Toronto in the 1960s and 70s. Bush represented Canada at the 1967 Sao Paolo Biennale, and the Art Gallery of Ontario toured a retrospective of his work in 1976. During these two decades, Bush also achieved commercial and critical success in New York and was praised and promoted by the esteemed art critic, Clement Greenberg. As a result of their interactions, Bush would become friendly with several of the artists affiliated with the color-field movement including Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland. However unlike many of his American contemporaries, Bush only realized a small number of multiples during his lifetime. "Green Loop" is representative of Bush's style from the early 1970s. Like the best of his work, it is defined by strong lines, soft shapes, passionate color tone, and powerful simplicity. Note the nuanced grey background. Bush devised this layered technique, first realized on large-scale canvases, with sponges. Several similar works from this era were recently on display at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection as part of the exhibit "Jack Bush: In the Studio".
