John Baldessari
Four Hands and a Baseball Bat, 2015 Print by John Baldessari

2015

About the Item

This is a black and white archival inkjet print on Canson Infinity paper. Hand signed and numbered by the artist, John Baldessari. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Lincoln Center Education, a pioneering, international leader in arts education, renowned visual artist John Baldessari has created the limited edition print Four Hands and a Baseball Bat (2015), a clever visual pun on what it means to “play.” The grainy image harkens back to the glory days of baseball. Baldessari has cropped out the immediately identifiable characteristics of the original image and zoomed in on a specific area of the found photograph. By focusing on the baseball player’s hands, Baldessari associates the playing done by legendary athletes on the field to the playing that is done by legendary performers on Lincoln Center’s stages. Note: This print is unframed. The framed image is for reference purposes only. Baldessari is a recipient of the Americans for the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement awarded by the Venice Biennale. His works are held in the many public art collections including: The Art Institute of Chicago, National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Jenny Holzer is one of the most important and original artists of the 20th century. Her body of work, with an emphasis on text, is consistently provocative and occasionally frightening, manipulating the language of both pop culture and government slogan to produce commentary on global issues notably power structures and warfare. Holzer's iconic "Inflammatory Essays", produced between 1979 and 1982, were first pasted on walls throughout heavily populated metro areas including New York and other cities. Composed of anonymous statements, printed on friendly or calm colored papers, the statements were influenced by writings of major political figures such as Emma Goldman...
