Artist Biography Marc Chagall was a Russian-born painter and printmaker of Jewish heritage, holding both Russian and French citizenship. A prominent figure of the École de Paris, he received his first drawing lessons from the Vitebsk painter Yehuda Pen. In 1907, he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. From 1910 to 1914, he lived in Paris on a scholarship, where he encountered Cubism and befriended Guillaume Apollinaire and Max Jacob. In 1915, he married Bella, who became the muse for many of his works. In 1919, he served as the artistic director of the State Jewish Theater in Moscow. From 1947, he lived permanently in Paris. Initially, Chagall's works exhibited a naïve realism, but over time, they were influenced by Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. His paintings are characterized by dreamlike, poetic compositions, often depicting themes of love, landscapes, and religious scenes. His distinctive style includes distorted forms, shifted proportions, and a vibrant palette dominated by reds, blues, and greens.
