The work has been framed for the first time by the present gallery, using high quality materials. -- Marc Chagall's L'Odyssée series, created in 1974, is a collection of lithographs inspired by Homer's epic The Odyssey. The series reflects Chagall's signature dreamlike and fantastical style, blending mythology with his personal artistic vision. Themes and Symbolism: - The lithographs depict key moments from The Odyssey, emphasizing themes of adventure, divine intervention, and human struggle. - Chagall’s signature floating figures, celestial beings, and surreal color palette create an ethereal atmosphere. - The series features Odysseus and other mythological characters, often surrounded by hybrid creatures, angels, and sea-inspired imagery. - The use of rich blues, greens, and warm tones evokes the Mediterranean landscapes and the mystical aura of Homer’s tale. Artistic Style: - Chagall employs a mix of abstraction and figuration, with loose, expressive lines and vibrant color washes. - His interpretation focuses on emotional depth rather than strict narrative accuracy, emphasizing the poetic and allegorical nature of The Odyssey. Historical Context: - Commissioned as a visual homage to classical literature, the L'Odyssée series aligns with Chagall’s broader interest in mythology, spirituality, and storytelling. - It is considered one of his major lithographic achievements, alongside his Bible illustrations and works inspired by Russian folklore.
