This unique set of four works by the late Peter Beard features Vietnamese concert pianist Chau-Giang Thi Nguyen - one of Beard's muses. Peter Beard is well-known as one of Andy Warhol's friends and artistic collaborators during the Studio 54 and Factory days. But of all his many achievements, including his critically acclaimed wildlife photography, Beard is perhaps best known as the photographer who famously discovered the model Iman in Somalia, and whose images of her helped catapult her to international superstardom. Iman would later marry rock star David Bowie. In a similar vein, this set of intimate, posed photographic portraits depicts Vietnamese concert pianist Chau-Giang Thi Nguyen (also known as Cho-San Nguyen), founder of the American Vietnamese Friendship Organization (AVFO). Taken in 2006, the works show her seductively posing against a stylized backdrop of portraits of famous composers. In addition to her musical accomplishments and charitable ventures, Cho-San Nguyen is also quite the socialite herself, and in those years, she frequently appeared in the tabloids for a different reason: she was rumored to be one of the many alleged mistresses (or muses) of the very married, and very influential Google billionaire Eric Schmidt...

This rare original lithograph print is from 1899. It is one sheet of a huge 24 sheet poster that was created in 1899 to announce Buffalo Bills Wild West. The size of the complete 24 sheet poster would have been approx. 10 feet tall by 20 feet wide and would have been posted on barns and buildings in 1899 to promote Buffalo Bills Wild West before it would come to towns. This 1 sheet of the 24 sheet lithograph is in such good condition because it was found in the Lithographers draws of the print shop that created the poster. It is black and white because it was a proof that was used to create the final layout of the color poster. It indicates on the image that it is No. 2 Buffalo Bill San Juan Hill 1899, so it would have been the 2nd poster down on the left side of the large total image comprised of 24 separate sheets all unique to create the full image. You can see the two black printed lines on the left side indicate where the edge of the poster would have been. We have never seen a complete image of this rare 1899 poster. When we first acquired this rare proof over 20 years ago, we contacted the The Ringling Museum in Florida that houses a large Buffalo Bill poster...

Backyard Garden belongs to the set of twenty lithographs from the “Snatched Ecstasy of Yue Minjun”, which comes as a limited edition of 130 rare books. The work of Yue Minjun is instantly recognizable with its uniform laughing faces, the artist's faces. Minjun creates various realities against which the laughing figures are rendered, thus creating ambiguous images, often with the sinister atmosphere, which comes as his personal cynical reaction to various social and political dimensions of contemporary Chinese realities. Immediately humorous and sympathetic, Yue Minjun’s paintings offer a light-hearted approach to philosophical enquiry and contemplation of existence. Yue’s self-portraits have been describe by theorist Li Xianting as “a self-ironic response to the spiritual vacuum and folly of modern-day China”, thus the acidic tones and commercialized vacuity of his works are used to underscore the insincerity of his figures’ mirth.

Yue Min-Jun (born 1962, Daqing, China) is one of the leading Chinese artists. He is best known for oil paintings depicting formations of his laughing self-portraits in various settings. His iconography is easily recognisable, it challenges social and cultural conventions by depicting objects and political issues in a radical, abstract, ironic and cynical manner.
