This artwork titled "The Zealot" c.1950 is an original woodcut by Hungarian/American artist Julius F. Faysash, 1904-1977. It is hand signed, titled and numbered 4/50 in pencil by the artist. The image (woodblock mark) is 10 x 8 inches, framed size is 18 x 15 inches. Custom framed in a wooden grey frame and light beige matting. It is in very good condition.
About the artist:
Julius F. Faysash was born 1904 in Budapest Hungary. He and his family moved to the United States in 1914. His father, Emanuel Faysash was a cabinet maker and settled in Cleveland Ohio area. A short time later the family moved to Akron, Ohio where Faysash remained the rest of his life.
Julius graduated from the Cleveland School of Art and attended Akron University in 1927. He was a founding member of the Akron Society of Artists in 1931 and was the president of the Society in 1934 and 1946. He was an illustrator for the Firestone Company from the 1940's until his retirement from the company in 1969, mainly working in watercolor for this time period.
After retirement he began traveling to Mexico 6 months out of the year and began working in oils, acrylics and printmaking. He received an M.F.A. in 1973 from the Instituto Allende/University of Guanajuato, Mexico. He also had further studies under Henry G. Keller and in portraiture with Wayman Adams, Sandor Vago...

Kinuta is a wonderful color xylograph on paper, made by the Japanese master Tsukiota Kogyo (1869-1927).
The artist's signature is in the red seal printed in the lower right corner "Tsukioka".
From the series "One Hundred No Dramas" (Nogaku Hyakuban), published by Matsuki Heikichi (Daikokuya) and published in 1922.
Kinuta is the wife of the prince of Ashiya, portrayed while she is ironing the laundry, beating a sort of fan so that the sound brings her wish to her husband in the distant capital.
In excellent conditions, except for a little stain on the higher left margin, and some light decolorations, this original print preserves his freshness of line and colors. The texture of the princess's kimono has a precious golden hatch, and the artwork keeps still today the rare beauty and the incredible delicatessen inspired his creation, and in perfect syntony with the Japanese mood.

ABOUT THE WORK:
Jim Dine began painting bathrobes in 1964; some of them were titled or subtitled as self portrait. The bathrobe became a motif in his repertoire which he has returned to on many occasions, in prints as well as paintings. Though he claimed never to wear a bathrobe, nonetheless these are all, in a way, portraits and self portraits.
Dexter's Four Robes illustrates the enduring importance of the bathrobe motif in Dine's work, a motif that he has been using over the years in countless printed works to depict mostly himself, but also his wife and people around him.

Steinhardt, Jakob, Painter and Woodcut Artist. b. 1887, Yaacov Steinhardt was born in the then remote, largely Polish town of Zerkow in the Posen District of Germany. (poland/german) Immigrated 1933. Studies: 1906 School of Art, 1906 Studied in Berlin Arts and Crafts School. Berlin; 1907 painting with Lovis Corinth and engraving and etching with Hermann Struck; advanced studies, 1908-10 Paris, with Henri Matisse and Steinlen; 1911 Italy. Teaching: Bezalel, Jerusalem, 1953-57 Director. 1910 Participated in the “New Sezession”, Berlin. 1912 together with Ludwig Meidner and Janthur he founded the "Pathetiker" group very early in the German expressionist movement. Running afoul of the Nazis, he fled to Tel-Aviv and then Jerusalem in the early 30s, showing in “Der Sturm” Gallery. 1914 Exhibited with ludwig Meidner at first Expressionist Exhibition in Berlin. Worked mainly in woodcuts depicting biblical and other Jewish subjects. 1955-58 International awards for his woodcuts. receives graphic commissions from Fritz Gurlitt. 1922 Marries Minni Gumpert. Active in organizing Secession exhibits. 1925 Trips to Mark Brandenburg and Holy Land. Turns primarily to painting; stops work on etchings and lithographs. 1933 Emigrates to the Palestine. 1934 Moves to Jerusalem and opens an art school; attempts some etchings. 1948 Closes the art school and becomes Chairman of Graphics Department, Bezalel School for Arts and Crafts. 1954-57 Director of Bezalel School for Arts and Crafts. Taken up by J. B. Neumann who became the agent for his etchings. He often used wood-cutting techniques that were popular amongst German Expressionists. Steinhardt was driven to express ideas clearly and decisively through art.
Amongst the themes found in his work the prophets of the Bible, such as Jonah, are noticeable. Steinhardt identified deeply with Jonah due to his attempt to run from God's call to duty.
Additionally, the image of beggars was often found in Steinhardt's works and in his artistic presentation of the less fortunate, the artist's love for his fellow man becomes evident.
Moreover, the grotesque was a theme noticeable in Steinhardt's earliest pieces. These were fantastical images; it was unclear whether or not they were human or demon. In the 1950's, Steinhardt returned to these images upon learning of the Holocaust of Europe's Jews. At that time he resided in New York and there, in the shadow of the skyscrapers, Steinhardt's reaction to WWII was expressed through his art.

This is an original gallery show poster the Boris Mirsky Gallery, Newbury St. Boston. titled Sculpture Prints Drawings. It is dated 1962. it is in red and black.
Leonard Baskin (August 15, 1922 – June 3, 2000) was an American sculptor, illustrator, wood-engraver, printmaker, graphic artist, writer and teacher.
Baskin was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. While he was a student at Yale University, he founded Gehenna Press, a small private press specializing in fine book production. From 1953 until 1974, he taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Subsequently Baskin also taught at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.
He lived most of his life in the U.S., but spent nine years in Devon at Lurley Manor, Lurley, near Tiverton, close to his friend Ted Hughes, for whom he illustrated Crow. Sylvia Plath dedicated Sculpto to Leonard Baskin in her famous work, The Colossus and Other Poems (1960).

His public commissions include a bas relief for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and a bronze statue of a seated figure, erected in 1994 for the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
His works are owned by many major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Udinotti Museum of Figurative Art and the Vatican Museums. The archive of his work at the Gehenna Press was acquired by the Bodleian Library at Oxford, England, in 2009. The McMaster Museum of Art in Hamilton, Ontario owns over 200 of his works (some religious and biblical), most of which were donated by his brother Rabbi Bernard Baskin.
In 1955, he was one of eleven New York artists featured in the opening exhibition at the Terrain Gallery, they showed many great artists, Chaim Koppelman, for many years, headed the gallery's Print Division; printmakers such as Will Barnet, Leonard Baskin, Robert Conover...
