About the Item

Color linocut on strong wove paper, realized in 1962. Image dimension: 53.2x39.2; Sheet dimension 62.5x44.3 cm. One of the "épreuves de passe" remaining with the printer Arnéra in Vallauris, verso with the stamp "Archives Arnéra / épreuve d'essai / non signée", signed by Arnéra. Print outside the edition of 1963. This image was made from two linoleum plates: A. The border, which was later used for other sheets of the same size, always printed in a single colour. B. The plate for the head, printed in two different shades of grey, white, and black. Charming depiction of a Spanish nobleman, freely after El Greco. Excellent condition, with very fresh colors and a truly fine impression. Ref. Bloch 1148; Baer 1320/B/b/2. Prov. Arnéra Printing House; Galerie Kornfeld. A striking linocut from Picasso’s celebrated series of portraits à la fraise, inspired by the 17th-century tradition of Spanish portraiture. Executed with bold, angular contours and dramatic contrasts of black, grey, and white, the work captures the psychological intensity of the sitter, framed within a rich red decorative border. This print exemplifies Picasso’s inventive mastery of linocut, a medium he radically redefined in collaboration with printer Hidalgo Arnéra during the early 1960s.
