Description:
Rembrandt van Rijn is one of the most celebrated Dutch painters of all time, and rose to prominence in the 17th century for his characteristic use of light and contrast to convey emotion and mood. Much of his artistic practice consisted of history paintings, portraits, and self-portraits, with his rich oil paintings inspiring artists through the centuries. Rembrandt himself once said, “Life etches itself onto our faces as we grow older, showing our violence, excesses or kindnesses.” Correspondingly, his etchings have become incredibly sought after for their dynamism and realism.
This rare original etching self-portrait was most likely a practical exercise in the medium. Rembrandt's signature cross-hatching technique is well exhibited in his definition of the wrinkles of his face and the texture of his clothes. In such a work, Rembrandt attends not to an idealization of his portrait, but instead a grounded realism, in which his features evoke melancholy and peace. The work has been framed under glass in an appropriate 17th century old master style frame.
Biörklund's fifth state (of 5), after the reduction of the plate; Usticke's seventh state (of 7); White and Boon's fifth state (of 5). According to Usticke, "An extremely rare, small self portrait, RRR+" (Usticke illustrates an impression in reverse, which is evidently either a counter proof from the original plate or the reverse copy he notes in his catalogue).

Rembrandt van Rijn
Rembrandt was the most influential 17th Century Dutch painter. After years of early success as a portrait painter, his life was beset by financial hardship and personal tragedy. He continued to paint portraits and develop etchings. Rembrandt's portraits of his contemporaries, self-portraits and illustrations of scenes from the Bible are regarded as his greatest creative triumphs. His self-portraits form a unique and intimate autobiography, in which the artist surveyed himself without vanity and with the utmost sincerity. Like many artists of the Dutch Golden Age, such as Jan Vermeer of Delft, Rembrandt was also an avid art collector and dealer. Rembrandt never went abroad, but he was considerably influenced by the work of the Italian masters and Netherlandish artists who had studied in Italy, like Pieter Lastman, the Utrecht Caravaggists, Flemish Baroque, and Peter Paul Rubens. Rembrandt's foremost contribution in the history of printmaking was his transformation of the etching process from a relatively new reproductive technique into a true art form, along with Jacques Callot. His reputation as the greatest etcher in the history of the medium was established in his lifetime and never questioned since. Few of his paintings left the Dutch Republic while he lived, but his prints were circulated throughout Europe, and his wider reputation was initially based on them alone.

This etching is after a painting from 1554 by Dutch artist Anthonis Mor (c. 1517-1577). Comes with its original tissue cover sleeve.
This etching was published by Gazette des Beaux-Arts. The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002.
