This beautiful format aquatint engraving has unparalleled originality, standing out in the work of Serge Poliakoff for the brilliance of its colors.
The finesse of this technique makes it possible to obtain a light and luminous rendering of light colors, dominated by an acid yellow, thus establishing a strong contrast with the black projection. The latter penetrates the center of the composition through the diagonal axis and structures the internal dynamism of the work, revealing a new duality. The use of a subtle gradient, resulting from a superposition of pigments, contrasts with more pronounced areas of yellow and black. Thus, the impression of diluted material illuminates the composition and the chromatic dissonance.

Serge Poliakoff was a Russian-born French modernist painter belonging to the New Ecole de Paris (Tachisme). His father, a Kyrgyz, supplied the army with horses that he bred himself and also owned a racing stable.
