1990

About the Item

Untitled (SF-343) from 1990 is a lithograph on paper, image size 46.5 x 30 inches, signed 'Sam Francis' lower left and annotated lower right. From the edition of 60, numbered 17/50 (there were also 7 artist proofs, 2 CTP and a BAT), framed in a contemporary white frame. Catalogue - Lembark, L.284 Regarding Francis’s final lithographs (L.284 and L.285 created in 1989 and printed in 1990), Ruth Fine discusses their relation to his etching work in the 1980s, noting “While continuing to explore the forms, compositions and fields that appeared in the earlier lithographs, through the 1980s Francis pared down in his prints, using fewer forms more freely, imbuing them with a celebratory spirit and a greater sense of intimacy – champagne rather than fireworks. Circles, horseshoes (or snakes), streamers, forms that suggest flowers… these new forms, and the increasing numbers of brilliant colors in the lithographs of this decade, parallel the color explorations that were central to Francis’s etchings during this same period.” (1) (1) Fine, Ruth E., "Patterns Across the Membrane of the Mind."
