About the Item

Adored by collectors and art lovers around the globe, Alex Katz is renowned for his elegant and distinctive version of figuration. Born in 1927, Katz has been dedicated to art-making since the 1950's - however it wasn't until the 60's when he established his signature 'flat' figurative style. Over the succeeding decades, Katz kept the tradition of figurative painting alive as it had gone out of style. For Katz, printmaking has always been an essential part of his process, and as an integral part of his oeuvre. "Goldenrod" is one of seven large-scale images from the Flowers portfolio. See another example from the portfolio here. Flowers have always been a favorite subject for Katz. He has been depicting and interpreting the flora and fauna or Maine including goldenrods, dogwoods, lilies, and tulips for over 60 years. Click here to see another example of Katz's flowers. "Goldenrod" is a high-contrast, visually-striking composition offering vibrant, golden yellow petals against a dramatic black backdrop. Katz creates a vibrating continuous pattern with the two dominant colours volleying for attnetion. "Goldenrod" is curiously the only image in the Flowers portfolio with a black backdrop. The detail in this print, translated through high-quality laser printing, is astounding, and an element that was very important to Katz when he was working on the production of the Flowers portfolio. Toronto Flag
By Charles Pachter
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting, and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon. The barn, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Moose, forms a triad of icons that Charles Pachter has repeatedly visited over the course of his career. Playful and a touch irreverent, Pachter's charming imagery presents a new narrative on Canadiana. The artist’s vast body of work includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. Pachter’s works are widely sought-after and are an ideal selection for starting or continuing a collection of 20th-century Canadian art. Pachter's confident colors, sharp lines, and graphic qualities are instantly recognizable and continue to be a mainstay throughout his oeuvre. Here with an image of the classic TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) streetcars, this work epitomizes Pacther’s version of Canadian Pop Art...
