JAMES ROSENQUIST (1933-2017) A leader and highly recognized pop artist, Rosenquist used the techniques in his work that he learned as a commercial billboard painter. This was perfect training, as it turned out, for an artist about to explode onto the pop art scene as he deftly applied sign-painting techniques to the large-scale paintings he began creating in the early pop movement of the 1960s. Like other pop artists, he adapted the visual language of advertising and pop culture (often funny, vulgar, and outrageous) to the context of fine art. Rosenquist achieved international acclaim in 1965 with the room-scale painting F-111.

'Elizabeth's Cone II', Hand Colored Aquatint Etching with the plate (image itself) 15 x 22 inches. On a larger piece of archival paper . An iconic still life image featuring the “tragedy” of a dropped ice cream cone. The artist came to see dropped cones as fleeting promises of joy; offering refreshing coolness, a mixture of favorite flavors, soft ice cream gushiness, and crunch of cake cone. Whether devoured or dropped, their existence is short lived. Beside the alluring visual attributes, dropped cones represent a metaphor for the temporal nature of life, itself. And was an important sub-series for James Torlakson...
