Laurent Schkolnyk
Untitled Symbolic French Still Life by Laurent Schkolnyk

20th Century

About the Item

This gorgeous and subtle still life print by Laurent Schkolnyk, realized in France during the latter half of the 20th Century. The work features an arrangement of objects on a plane, presumably a table. Fabric, appearing to be drapes in a sumptuous copper hue, gathers the right edge of the composition next to a perfume bottle with a bulbous base that tapers to a elegantly attenuated neck in a vibrant lime green hue with stylized foliate detailing in azure. The perfume bottle also offers an umber hued atomizer. Moving from right to left, there is a half circular bowl with an abstracted white starburst pattern engraved into the sky blue exterior and a sunflower yellow interior. A white letter envelope with emerald green accents (and inflections of blue and yellow) leans against the bowl, behind which there is a metallic plate (presumably in sterling silver). The plate shows a detailed reflection of a building that appears to be a Russian Orthodox Church with striated onion domes at its apex. Finally, on the far left of the composition, there is another vessel- a white vase with curvilinear abstracted sky blue detailing that appears to be East asian in origin (likely Chinese). This piece is not only expertly rendered, but full of intrigue and mystery. Questions- such as whose objects are these? Where in the world is this mise-en-scene set (Russia?)? What are the contents of the letter?- provide ample fodder for the mind to explore. With its well balanced composition and rich color palate, this piece is sure to delight discerning art collectors, as well as those with a penchant for all things exquisite. It comes presented in a custom gilded gallery frame and is in excellent vintage condition. Laurent Schkolnyk was born in France in 1953. He studied drawing and printmaking at the Fine Arts School in Nantes. Schkolnyk is known as one of the rare masters of the Mezzotint medium, pioneered in the Netherlands in the 17th Century. He has had major exhibitions throughout Europe including in Paris, Lyon and Limoges, as well as. Boston, Osaka, Seattle and Seoul. Additionally he is the in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles Art Museum, the Printing Museum of Nantes and the Bibloioteque National Print Collection in Paris among other institutions.
