Strong colors and full margins Extremely rare Notes: Lithography by English artist Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) and hand-coloring by English artist George Graves, Jr. (1754-1839) after drawings by English artists Thomas Allport (1804-1879), Rebecca Miller (Active: Early 19th Century), Margaret Roscoe (1787-1840), Mrs. James Dixon (Active: Early 19th Century), Ellen Yates (Active: Early 19th Century), Emily Fletcher (Active: Early 19th Century), Mary Waln (English, 1782-1841), and other unidentified "native artists". Comes from Roscoe's one volume "Monandrian Plants of the order Scitamineae", (1824-1828) (First edition), which consists of 112 hand-colored lithographs. Printed in one color from one copper plate: black. "Phrynium Myrosma" has a "J Whatman Turkey Mill 1826" watermark upper right in its sheet. "Costus Maculatus" has a "J Budgen 1823" watermark lower right in its sheet. "Kaempferia Galanga (Aromatic Ginger)" has a "J Budgen 1823" watermark lower left in its sheet. Gold gilded edges as issued. Kaempferia galanga, commonly known as kencur, aromatic ginger, sand ginger, cutcherry, is a monocotyledonous plant in the ginger family, and one of four plants called galangal. Biography: William Roscoe (8 March 1753 – 30 June 1831) was an English banker, lawyer, and briefly a Member of Parliament. He is best known as one of England's first abolitionists, and as the author of the poem for children "The Butterfly's Ball", and the "Grasshopper's Feast". In his day he was also respected as a historian and art collector, as well as a botanist and miscellaneous writer. The standard author abbreviation Roscoe is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name.
