"Casa Marquez" Original Woodblock Print, Signed and Numbered 93/100
Located in Soquel, CA
"Casa Marquez" Original Woodblock Print, Signed and Numbered 93/100 Boldly colored woodblock print by Carol Summers (American, 1925-2016). This piece is a closeup on a large stone building, with a landscape reflected in the windows. The building has carved ornamentation in a classical style. There is a bright red sunset in the background behind the building. The title refers to the author Gabriel García Márquez. Signed "Carol Summers" in the lower right corner. Numbered and titled "93/100 Casa Marquez" in the upper right corner. Presented in a silver colored aluminum frame. Frame size: 19.25"H x 23.25"W Paper size: 16"H x 20"W Carol Summers (1925-2016) has worked as an artist throughout the second half of the 20th century and into the first years of the next, outliving most of his mid-century modernist peers. Initially trained as a painter, Summers was drawn to color woodcuts around 1950 and it became his specialty thereafter. Over the years he has developed a process and style that is both innovative and readily recognizable. His art is known for it’s large scale, saturated fields of bold color, semi-abstract treatment of landscapes from around the world and a luminescent quality achieved through a printmaking process he invented. In a career that has extended over half a century, Summers has hand-pulled approximately 245 woodcuts in editions that have typically run from 25 to 100 in number. His talent was both inherited and learned. Born in 1925 in Kingston, a small town in upstate New York, Summers was raised in nearby Woodstock with his older sister, Mary. His parents were both artists who had met in art school in St. Louis. During the Great Depression, when Carol was growing up, his father supported the family as a medical illustrator until he could return to painting. His mother was a watercolorist and also quite knowledgeable about the different kinds of papers used for various kinds of painting. Many years later, Summers would paint or print on thinly textured paper originally collected by his mother. From 1948 to 1951, Carol Summers trained in the classical fine and studio arts at Bard College and at the Art Students League of New York. He studied painting with Steven Hirsh and printmaking with Louis Schanker. He admired the shapes and colors favored by early modernists Paul Klee (Sw: 1879-1940) and Matt Phillips (Am: b.1927- ). After graduating, Summers quit working as a part-time carpenter and cabinetmaker (which had supported his schooling and living expenses) to focus fulltime on art. That same year, an early abstract, Bridge No. 1 was selected for a Purchase Prize in a competition sponsored by the Brooklyn Museum. In 1952, his work (Cathedral, Construction and Icarus) was shown the first time at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in an exhibition of American woodcuts...

Original American work incentive poster: ‘HE IS RISEN”. Artist: Willared Frederick Elmes. This isn't actually a war/propaganda poster per se, but it was produced by Mather & Co. Elmes was an artist similar to Mather in that they were both prolific with their morale + work incentive posters in the 1930s. Elmes also created other pieces done for the early railway posters. The poster with the stained-glass panel in the back and the ray of light shining in is the last Mather & Company poster printed (1930). All others were printed in 1929 and earlier. The very last in the Work Incentive Mather’s posters...

St Sepulchre, The Round Church, Cambridge exterior after Pugin for Ackermann
Located in London, GB
To see our other Oxford and Cambridge pictures, including an extensive collection of works by Ackermann, scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this Seller" - or send us a message if you cannot find the view you want. John Hill (1770 - 1850) after Augustus Charles Pugin (1762 - 1832) St Sepulchre's - The Round Church (1814) Aquatint with original hand colouring 24 x 29 cm Published by Rudolph Ackermann (1764 - 1834). An engraving of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Cambridge, the round shape of which is inspired by the rotunda in the church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem. John Hill was born in London in 1770, and was an engraver's apprentice. He worked in aquatint and largely produced book illustration aquatints. He went to America in 1816 and produced the notable Picturesque Views of American Scenery amongst other books of prints. Augustus Charles Pugin was an Anglo-French artist and architectural draughtsman. Pugin produced views of London, jointly creating the illustrations for the 'Microcosm of London' published by Rudolph Ackermann in 1811, followed by plates for Ackermann's books about Westminster Abbey, Oxford and Cambridge universities, and Winchester College. His later works included illustrations for Specimens of Gothic Architecture (1821–1823), The Royal Pavilion at Brighton (1826), Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain (1826), Specimens of the Architectural Antiquities of Normandy (1827), Illustrations of the Public Buildings of London (1825 to 1828), Paris and its Environs (1829 to 1831), and Examples of Gothic Architecture (1831). He also produced a book of furniture designs called Gothic Furniture, and assisted architects with detailing for their gothic designs. He ran a drawing school at his house in Bloomsbury. Ackermann was an Anglo-German bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher and businessman. He attended the Latin school in Stollberg, but his wish to study at the university was made impossible by lack of financial means, and he therefore became a saddler like his father. He worked as a saddler and coach-builder in different German cities, moved from Dresden to Basel and Paris, and then, 23 years old, settled in London. He established himself in Long Acre, the centre of coach-making in London and close to the market at Covent Garden. Ackermann then moved to Little Russell Street where he published Imitations of Drawings of Fashionable Carriages (1791) to promote his coach-making. Other publications followed. In 1795 he established a print-shop and drawing-school at 96 Strand. Here Ackermann set up a lithographic press and began a trade in prints. He later began to manufacture colours and thick carton paper for landscape and miniature painters. Within three years the premises had become too small and he moved to 101 Strand, in his own words "four doors nearer to Somerset House", the seat of the Royal Academy of Arts. Between 1797 and 1800 Ackermann rapidly developed his print and book publishing business, encompassing many different genres including topography, caricature, portraits, transparencies and decorative prints. During the Napoleonic wars, Ackermann was an energetic supporter of the Allied cause and made significant contributions to British propaganda through his publication of anti-Napoleonic prints...

The West Prospect of the Cathedral of York /// "Britannia Illustrata" Engraving
Located in Saint Augustine, FL
Artist: Johannes "Jan" Kip (Dutch, 1652/3-1722) Title: "The West Prospect of the Cathedral of York" (Vol. 3, Plate 31) Portfolio: Britannia Illustrata / Le Nouveau Théâtre de la Grande Bretagne Year: 1715-1724 (Third edition) Medium: Original Engraving and Etching on cream laid paper Limited edition: Unknown Printer: Joseph Smith, London, UK Publisher: Joseph Smith, London, UK Reference: "London Illustrated 1604-1850" - Adams No. 22; Crace No. 201; Brunet IV No. 114; Lowndes No. 1277; Lewine page 263-264 Sheet size: 19.25" x 24.19" Image size: 16.75" x 22.5" Condition: With centerfold as issued. Some light toning and foxing mainly in margins, and some light edgewear. Has been professionally stored away for decades. It is otherwise a strong impression in very good condition Rare Notes: Provenance: private collection - Ross-on-Wye, UK. Engraved by Dutch artist Johannes "Jan" Kip (1652/3-1722) after a drawing by Dutch artist Leonard Knyff or Leendert Knijff (1650-1722). Comes from Kip's six volume (including Supplement and 'Atlas Anglois') "Britannia Illustrata" / Le Nouveau Théâtre de la Grande Bretagne", (1724-1728) (Third edition), which consists of 394 engravings and etchings. Printed in one color from one copper plate: black. Biography: Johannes "Jan" Kip (1652/53 in Amsterdam - 1722 in Westminster) was a Dutch draftsman, engraver and print dealer. Together with Leonard Knyff, he made a speciality of engraved views of English country houses. Kip was a pupil of Bastiaen Stopendaal (1636–1707), from 1668 to 1670, before setting up on his own; his earliest dated engravings are from 1672. In April 1680, at the age of 27, he married Elisabeth Breda in Amsterdam. After producing works for the court of William of Orange in Amsterdam, Kip followed William and Mary to London and settled in St. John Street in Farringdon, where he conducted a thriving printselling business. He also worked for various London publishers producing engravings after such artists as Francis Barlow (c. 1626–1704) and Caius Gabriel Cibber (1630–1700), largely for book illustrations. He made several engraved plates for Awnsham & John Churchill's "A Collection of Voyages & Travels" (first published 1704). He signed the African scenes in volume V of the 1732 edition as "J. Kip". His most important works were the large fold-out folio illustrations for "Britannia Illustrata", 1708; for the 65 folio plates he engraved for the antiquary Sir Robert Atkyns, "The Ancient and Present State of Glostershire", 1712 (1st edition); and for "Le Nouveau Théâtre de la Grande Bretagne ou description exacte des palais de la Reine, et des Maisons les plus considerables des des Seigneurs & des Gentilshommes de la Grande Bretagne", 1715, an extended reprint in collaboration with other artists. The linked careers of Jan Kip and Leonard Knyff made a specialty of engraved views of English country houses, represented in detail from the bird's-eye view, a pictorial convention for topography. Their major work was "Britannia Illustrata: Or Views of Several of the Queens Palaces, as Also of the Principal seats of the Nobility and Gentry of Great Britain, Curiously Engraven on 80 Copper Plates", London (1707, published in the winter of 1708–9). The volume is among the most important English topographical publications of the 18th century. Architecture is rendered with care, and the settings of parterres and radiating avenues driven through woods or planted across fields, garden paths, gates and toolsheds are illustrated in detail. The images are staffed with figures and horses, coaches pulling into forecourts, water...
