About the Item

Warm and Sunny is an offset lithograph by Takashi Murakami from 2011. The image size is 27 x 27 inches and the framed size is 39 x 39 inches. Framed in a contemporary, silver-tone frame. “When I was a student of Japanese painting, I was fascinated by new interpretations of the traditional genres in the canon, such as ‘Snow, Moon, Flower,’ and ‘Flower, Bird, Wind, Moon.’ These are classic subjects, but there are very few iconic treatments that you can point to and say, ‘This is it!’ Most of the modern attempts lack any trace of originality and are content to reproduce the dead motifs. I became enchanted with observing plants and flowers, and this became my own personal approach to understanding the canon of Japanese painting.” – Takashi Murakami (p.70. Murakami, T., Gioni, M. (2012). Murakami Ego. Rizzoli Electa, New York.) ‘Warm and Sunny’ is inspired by the monumental, six-panel installation ‘Kawaii – Vacances: Summer Vacation in the Kingdom of the Golden’ which was part of Murakami’s display at Versailles in 2010. ‘Kawaii-Vacances’ was an allusion to Keshi zu Byôbu’s ‘Poppies’, a six panel masterpiece from the Edo period, in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. “During his graduate school training as a Nihonga artist, Murakami studied many large-scale floral compositions from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Emphasizing sumptuous visuals over narrative content, both works share a lavish use of gold and highly saturated colors, in compositions that call attention to the surface of the picture plane. Moreover, they frequently repeat motifs, sometimes through the use of stencils...decorative imagery of this type has the potential to join the emotions of the viewer with the spirituality of nature. Fantasy and surprise are important parts of the ‘kazari’ aesthetic (‘the will to decorate’), as are asymmetry, exaggeration, stylization, and improvisation.” (pp 84 - 89. Morse, A. (ed), Murakami, T. (2018). Takashi Murakami: Lineage of Eccentrics: A Collaboration with Nobuo Tsuji and the Musuem of Fine Arts, Boston. MFA Publications, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.)
