About the Item
What makes this sculpture special is the wonderful melding of abstraction with content and the textured approach to surface of the bronze. What is also striking is the form of the Angel which is not soft and romantic but modern, angular and highly expressive. Starting in the 1950's and continuing in the 1960's, sculpture turned to inspiration from abstract expressionism and abstraction in general. We think of sculptors such as Henry Moore and more closely aligned to this Wein - Lynn Chadwick, the British sculptor.
This is probably a unique work even though it is numbered as an edition of 6. This is number 1 and with some knowledge from the estate and family on this piece, its probable he did not cast beyong that. This work has the estate of the artist as its provenance and the base it is on was chosen by the artist. A lovely variegated granite base.
Our images are accurate and the piece has some varying shades of green - maybe not quite as light green as you see in a couple of the closer shots. It reads as a lovely green patina that suits the subject. Albert Wein is a great American sculptor of the highest order. Meaning he takes the Prix De Rome in the 1940's which all our finest sculptors coveted. And from then on had an important and rich career moving from Classical modernism to abstraction and back to representational form late in life. Many public commissions and in museum collections.
This is a great size for any room, desk, table or console.
The subject is one of an Angel or Angel type messanger and the arms of this Angel or potentially wings span out in a gesture of openess and greeting and invitation. Wein was a master of interpretation of ideas into actual form.

Eugene Caples "Bronze Sculpture II" Abstract Bronze Sculpture
By Eugene Caples
Located in Detroit, MI
This small exquisite "Bronze Sculpture II" is in excellent condition and a perfect example of Eugene Caples craftsmanship. This is mainly abstract with some graphic or architectural elements and is so delightful that mythical creatures demand to be considered. It cries out to be touched and held, looked at and caressed. The beautiful patina on the surface gives voice to the many hands that have done these things.
Eugene Caples is a designer and craftsman who worked in Kansas City in the 1960s and later through the early 21st century. He attended the Kansas City Art Institute, earning his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Industrial Design in 1959. In 1963 he was accepted to Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
