About the Item

Henry Moore (1898-1986) is one of the most revered and influential British artists of the 20th century. While he worked in a number of different media and styles, Moore is best known for his revolutionary work in bronze sculpture. Moore had a long (and at times, complicated) relationship with Toronto, with multiple works still on public display throughout the city. Additionally, a vast collection of Moore’s work can be found at the Henry Moore Sculpture Centre, an internationally acclaimed permanent display at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Henry Moore’s Three Piece Reclining Figure, created in 1977, exemplifies the artist’s signature approach to form, abstraction, and the human figure. The bronze sculpture is composed of three distinct yet interconnected pieces, evoking the reclining human body in a fragmented yet harmonious arrangement. Each component is rounded and organic, with smooth curves and hollows that invite the play of light and shadow, emphasizing its tactile quality. Moore’s exploration of negative space, his fascination with the natural world, and his dedication to timeless themes are evident in this piece, making it a quintessential example of his work.

Venus Figure
By Sorel Etrog
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Sorel Etrog (1933 - 2014) is arguably Canada's most famous sculptor. His works can be found in numerous museums and private collections including the Tate, the AGO and LACMA. His public sculptures can be found on iconic corners in Toronto, Montreal, Israel and beyond. The Art Gallery of Ontario organized a major retrospective of his work that ran in 2013. This work is the earliest Etrog sculpture Caviar20 has handled to date. It is from Etrog's debut period and may be one of his first works to be casted. This untitled work aka "Venus Figure" merges two signature elements that Etrog employs or combines frequently - the primitive with modernist figuration. The proportions and curves of this work recall the ancient "Venus of Willendorf" sculpture - filtered through Etrog's abstracted bronze lens. Similar sculptures, referred to as "Venus Figurines...
