About the Item
Mid-century modern outdoor sculpture.
This imposing metal sculpture by the renowned Quebecois artist, Marcel Barbeau dominates the landscape. This monumental piece, ‘paravents du rêve’ translates as ‘dream screens’. Barbeau, born in Montreal, was one of the first Canadian painters to embrace abstraction long before it became popular. In his remarkable seven-decade career (1925-1990) he created more than 4,000 artworks including painting, sculpture, sound art and public art.

This sculpture is the only large one of his that is privately available. Marcel’s widow, Ninon Gauthier, PhD, historienne de l'art, sociologue et critique d’art, considers it one of his best sculptures. It was in the collection of his dealer. It has recently been subject to conservation and the original paint colour restored.
Marcel Barbeau studied painting and sculpture at the École du Meuble in Montreal. Throughout his career, he received many awards and in1995, he was made a member of the Order of Canada. Barbeau’s artworks are in collections all over the world.

This impressive circular architectural sculpture was created by Jeffrey Gillmor. An experienced metal artisan, this outdoor piece—a circle cut from a square is forged from etched steel and has a rust-coloured patina. Gillmor favours minimalist forms and finds inspiration for his work in nature’s colours, textures and shapes. World We See allows the viewer to not only see through the expansive ‘portal’ but walk through it as well. This is the largest of three similar sculptures in a series, each cut from the same four face plates of steel, producing another sculpture from the inside of the last.
