This abstract, three-dimensional wall sculpture was made by sculptor, Stephen Walling, in 2023. The artist created the work by intricately carving blocks of wood into geometric shapes, which were then arranged into a linear pattern on a wood panel backing. The wood blocks were painted a uniform slate grey and dark taupe. The sides are cleanly painted grey so a frame is completely optional. There is wire installed on the back.
About the artist:
Stephen Walling’s three-dimensional wall sculptures strike a visually harmonic balance of playful color and form with skillful design. Complex arrangements of carved wood, painted or dyed with acrylic paint, are composed in linear or stacked layers, inviting the viewer to revel in changes of shape and shadow with shifting perspectives. Quippy titles like Dot-Ditty-Dash and Splish Splash lend a humorist note while complementing the artist’s choice of color and carved forms. After a career as Art and Creative Director at Conde Nast, Walling moved to Germantown, NY, where he now lives and works. The gallery has represented his work for sixteen years.

Stephen Walling
Stephen Walling demonstrates a trained eye with wall relief sculptures of colorfully painted wood strips and blocks, intricately carved and composed into graphic arrangements. Although Walling’s sculptures are crafted around a dedication to color and shape, his newest body of works reveals a shift in inspiration and evolution in-studio process. In earlier work, the artist took his cues from nature representational forms based on the shapes of trees, slopes of the Catskill mountains and even aerial views were most prevalent. He also experimented with photo-collage, pasting images of backlit forests on varying heights of wood. More recently, Walling has found increasing comfort in the possibilities of abstraction. Walling now follows a kind of ‘mind-map’, influenced by almost anything and everything, when creating a new sculpture.
