About the Item
Yoshiyuki Miura was born in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1958. In 1985, he graduated in sculpture art from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts, he then moved to Munich, Germany, to study at the Academy of Fine Arts under Leo Kornbrust. With his sculptures and installations, the Japanese artist reflects the relation of space and time; he leads force and counterforce in order to bring them into a balanced state of tension and release.
Poet and philosopher, he devotes himself to the realization of monumental kinetic sculptures, in fact, he creates objects which play with our perception of three-dimensionality and that intrigue us with their extraordinary simplicity and beauty. His work combines Japanese minimalism with the tradition of optical kinetics in an outstanding way, and it can be seen as a systematic structuring of space. Discreet and economical, the Artist deliberately restricts his work to series of five pieces; with great sensitivity and outstanding technical precision, he creates order in the omnipresent chaos of everyday life. Following the legacy of Jesús Rafael Soto and Walter de Maria, he creates expansive installations and kinetic illusory bodies that only our individual perception can assemble into three-dimensional structures. Entirely made by hand, his steel pins, punctuated by colour, reveal the invisible; ephemeral spheres and other phantom forms. Yoshiyuki challenges the public in their certainty, with a precise and minimal trompe-l’oeil, as well as alluding to a perceived fourth dimension.

Graduated from the Munich Fine Arts Academy, Yoshiyuki Miura has not returned to his native Japan since completing his studies. Poet and philosopher, he devotes himself to the realisation of monumental kinetic sculptures. Discreet and economical, the Artist deliberately restricts his work to a series of five; his creations in galleries are scarce, even confidential. In continuity of the Kinetic Art tradition, ‘Yoshi’ is the proud legacy of Jesus Raphael Sotto. Made entirely by hand his steel pins, punctuated by colour, reveal the invisible; ephemeral spheres and other phantom forms. Playing hide and seek with your eyes they furtively reveal their presence at the pinnacle of movement. Immaterial and ethereal, his sculptures defy comprehension.
Yoshiyuki challenges the public in their certainty, with a precise and minimal trompe l’oeil, as well as alluding to a perceived fourth dimension. Sustainable, interactive, day or night, his Art is recognised as a forerunner of tomorrow.

Beginning in 1996, the artist experimented with a new format for his work in the "Projection" series, which resulted in mural sculptures. The artwork's heat reflective glass reflected the surroundings, but in a distorted and very different way than what a viewer might expect to see in a mirror. This position encouraged frontal viewing and played with the idea of a mirror.
The artist’s glass...
