About the Item

This Art Deco stylized work is by one of America's greatest sculptors. This is a wonderful and unique depiction of Motherhood different than a mother cradling a single child, here we see a Mother with her older children and one on the way! Albert Wein wins the Prix de Rome in the early 1940's and makes his way to Rome to study. At this time he, like Manship who wins this accolade a bit earlier, Wein adopts the wonderful curves and manner of the Art Deco style. He also garnered some WPA commissions. This work is done later when he moves through a few more stylistic changes including abstraction and then comes back to the representational subject matter and his earlier style. Artists such as Gaston LaChaise were well known too and in this work, similar to LaChaise we see Wein using volume in his figures. Wein was a family man, loved mythology, allegory and was known for his celebration and respect of the female form. This has a chocolate brown patina that is alive and rich!!! Beautifully cast by Tallix in 1989, and marked as conceived in 1975. Wein had modeled works all his life but in the late 1980's he signed a contract with the Tallix Foundry that cast this work. He was finally able to fill out real editions which were numbered only up to 12 casts. This is number 2/12. So it is fully signed and numbered. And provenance is Estate of the Family. This is a great size that can sit on any table or desk.

This joyous in the round bronze can turn on its base, making for dramatic presentation and enjoyment that is interactive. It is based on the idea of the Three Graces which is often an allegorical subject in sculpture. Wein has done a contemporary feeling interpretation of this classic theme. Piece itself measure 12 1/2 inches and sits on a 3 1/4 inch base and is attached to its base at two points and it is a revolving or rather turning base. The two points on which the toes touch and are secured are striking for how little of the bronze touches the base. It is Fourth in an edition of 13. Albert Wein...
