Rodin presented at the Salon of 1884 a first plaster copy of this bust of Aimé Jules Dalou alongside that of Victor Hugo. The two portraits of artists were a real success, as the critic Louis de Fourcaud testified: "There is nothing, at the Palais de l'industrie, more modern, because there is nothing so implacably and highly true." Rodin presented his friend, bare chested, in a heroic attitude and his face strikingly realistic. This image testifies to the relationship of esteem which binds the two artists, despite a fragile friendship caused by Dalou's stormy character. Through this portrait, however, Rodin showed his admiration for the man who returned from England after ten years of political exile and who had just triumphed at the Salon of 1883 with his relief of "Mirabeau responding to Dreux-Brézé". There are several bronze casts of this remarkable bust. Rodin first entrusted the casting to Bingen (work presented during the Universal Exhibition of 1889), to Griffoul (cast probably presented during the Universal Exhibition of 1900) and to Persinka (Sotckholm, private collection). An edition was then produced by Alexis Rudier between 1905 and the beginning of the 1930s, a dozen copies of which are currently kept in international public collections. Georges Rudier, on behalf of the Rodin Museum, cast two bronzes: our bust in 1955 (order dated January 5, 1955, Rodin Museum archives, side D7 RE 7) and a second in 1969.
