About the Item

"La Vague (The Wave)" is a figurative abstract bronze sculpture created by Camillle Claudel. The artwork is 24 1/4 x 19 x 24 inches, weighing less than 50 lbs. It is signed "C. Claudel" and stamped with foundry markings. Claudel was a pioneering French sculptor whose expressive, often emotional works broke new ground in the world of sculpture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A student and lover of renowned sculptor Auguste Rodin, Claudel's own style was marked by a bold sense of movement, psychological depth, and sensuality, often capturing the tension between the human form and raw emotion. She was inspired by the woodblock prints of the Japanese artist Hokusai, who would often represent waves in their work. The use of the wave as a central motif suggests themes of fluidity, change, and the uncontrollable nature of certain life experiences. There is debate about whether or not La Vague depicts joy or fear. The three women holding hands can evoke a feeling of happiness and an embrace of spontaneity, but it can also be interpreted as them cowering in anticipation.
