Biography :
Georges Lucien Guyot (1885-1973) known as Georges Guyot was a French animal artist. From an early age, he showed artistic abilities, but the modest conditions of his parents did not allow him to study art. He was doing his apprenticeship with a woodcarver. Guyot then excelled at copying works of the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but soon he showed a special attraction for nature. This attraction led him to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris where he could study wild animals and translated his observations into sculpture and painting.
As a famous figure of Montmartre, he was the host of the Bateau-Lavoir from the time of Cubism. In 1931, Georges Guyot joined the group of "The Twelve", created by François Pompon and Jane Poupelet, gathering sculptors like Marcel Lémar, Paul Jouve, André Margat, Jean-Claude de Saint-Marceaux, Georges Hilbert, or even the painter Adrienne Jouclard. The group exhibited, from April 8 to May 8, 1932, in the lounges of the hotel Ruhlmann and, a second time, from March 1 to 31, 1933, still at Ruhlmann. But the death of Jane Poupelet in 1932 and that of François Pompon in 1933 put an end to the association.
Upon the French Liberation, Georges Guyot was elected mayor of Neuville-sur-Oise. Very popular in his day, however, he must wait until 1970 to have a solo exhibition devoted to his works. He occupied Picasso's studio at Bateau-Lavoir where he died in 1973.

Georges Lucien Guyot
Georges Lucien Guyot was born on December 10, 1885, in Paris. He died in 1973. He was a 20th century French painter, animal sculptor, engraver and illustrator. He was a student of musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen. He exhibited in Paris, first at the Le Salon des Artistes Français, then at the Société du Salon d'automne. He was invited to the Salon des Tuileries and appeared at the Le Salon des peintres témoins de leur temps. In 1943, the Salon des Indépendants devoted an overall exhibition to him. He worked at the "Bateau-Lavoir" on Rue Ravignan for 52 years, until the fire destroyed his place. He waited for 85 years, in 1970, to see the first exhibition of his works. As a painter, he was not limited to animals. He worked during his young age on landscapes of the Rouen region, then views of the Ile de France and Montmartre where he lived. He illustrated De Goupil to Louis Margot by Louis Pergaud, and The Book of Beasts called savage André Demaison. All his life, he leaned over the study of animals, whose moving psychology he knew how to understand.

A sophisticated bronze casting of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel made in lost wax casting (cire perdue) from the beginning of the 20th century by Valsuani Foundry. This an unusual bronze approached in its aesthetic that’s reminiscent of the work of great animal sculptors of the second half of the 19th century except in this presentation which is more avant-garde for the time with a much looser, more impressionistic execution. The patina is a superb bronze color, brown and slightly greenish, going in places towards a more antique green.
