Measures: Height 98 cm Base 32 x 24 cm Louis-Ernest BARRIAS was born in Paris in 1841 into a modest family, the son of a porcelain painter and younger brother of the painter Felix-Joseph Barrias. He began his art studies by studying painting with Léon Cogniet, and then quickly turned to sculpture. It was in Jules Cavelier's atelier that he learned to know and love materials and acquire the skills of the trade: cutting stone and marble, chiseling and engraving bronze. By the time he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1858 under the direction of sculptor François Jouffroy, he had already acquired a skill and experience superior to that of many of his classmates. In 1861 he won the Second Grand Prix de Rome with the bas-relief "Crisaia returned to her father by Ulysses," and in the same year he exhibited two busts at the Salon. Barrias then began to build a reputation as a portrait painter. The young man completed his studies in decoration with Mathurin Moreau, created some works at the Paris Opéra and the statues of Virgil and Spring (1865) at the Hôtel de Païva. In 1865 he was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome for his bas-relief "Foundation of Marseilles-Glyph, son of a Gallic chieftain, chooses as her husband Photid, ambassador of Phocaea. " Barrias then left for Italy, traveled and completed his education while producing his obligatory works: a cycle of Fauns and Bacchae and a bust of Young Roman. In 1884 Barrias replaced Auguste Dumont at the Institut de France, then succeeded his master Cavelier as professor at the École des Beaux-Arts until his death in 1905. Throughout his career, Barrias received numerous public (City Hall of Poitiers, Paris Opéra, Louvre Palace, Paris City Hall, Sorbonne, Paris Museum of Natural History, etc.) and private commissions. Most of his works are exhibited in public places in Paris: at the Musée d'Orsay, Père-Lachaise Cemetery, and Montmartre.
