“Eden”
Located in Southampton, NY
Original hand cast bronze dual figure of a hollow dressed torso of a male and female representing Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The bronze sculpture is attributed to the American sculptor Judith Shea. This piece is a maquette for a life size bronze executed by this artist that is located in an outdoor space in Buffalo, New York. Both are titled “Eden” and were done in 1987. Condition is excellent. Unsigned. Label on the bottom of the thick pine base states the artist and title of the artwork. Provenance: A Long Island, New York collector.
Judith Shea has been a notable presence in the New York art world since the 1970s. Trained as a designer at Parsons, she soon found the fashion industry too restrictive and abandoned it in favor of making art. For her first solo show, at The Clocktower in 1976, Shea made a work based on color theory, using transparent silks in a spectrum of colors, worn by a live model. Other early work referenced clothing and its construction, first as flat, minimalist pattern and later as molded draping over implied, absent figures. In the 1981 Whitney Biennial, Shea showed three simple forms that evoked iconic clothes of the 1950s and 60s—the overcoat and the simple sheath dress—which hung from the wall as if on hangers. Five related works were included in the Hirshhorn’s Directions 83 survey. All of these works evoke human presence, felt as absence, as if the clothes were placeholders for missing persons. Thinking about her earlier clothes-based works, Shea has said that she “was looking for characters, for personae, really, to occupy them. I used clothes as stand-ins for people.”
With the support of NEA grants, Shea began to learn bronze casting, and she was able to also spend time in Paris studying the statuary of its parks and gardens. This research led to several hollow-figure compositions from the 1980s that were designed to be sited in public spaces, such as Eden (John Hancock Tower, Chicago), Shepherd’s Muse (Oliver Ranch), Shield (Sheldon Museum of Art), and Without Words (Walker Art Center). In the 1990s, after a residency at Chesterwood—the site of Daniel Chester French’s studio in Stockbridge—Shea began to use woodcarving to make monumental public sculpture. The first of these full-scale wooden figures were shown in 1992 at the Whitney Museum at Phillip Morris in New York. In 1994 her wooden equestrian statue The Other Monument, a monumental image of a black man on a black horse, was installed at Doris Freedman Plaza in New York, in the same plaza as the William Tecumseh Sherman...

Lions Head Big Game Trophy Natural Sisal Fiber Sculpture Lion Anne Andersson Art
Located in Surfside, FL
Anne Andersson
Sisal fiber wall sculpture
Lion's Head (# 13)
Hand signed to verso
Dated 2009.
Measures approx. 22 1/2" height x 14 1/2" width x 10" depth
Her sculptures are made of natural sisal Fiber from an agave and meticulously hand painted. The eyes are hand blown glass.
Anne Andersson was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a great desire to explore Nature and a Passion for Art. She received a degree in science in 1981 from Kjällbergska University in Gothenburg and a degree in Art from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. She now works from her studio in St. Petersburg, Florida as a Sculptor, illustrator and painter. Her work calls to mind the animalia artworks of Henri Maik and Gustavo Novoa.
Anne Andersson's artwork serves as an homage to our planet’s charismatic and rare wild animals. Inspired by the majesty and beauty of exotic wildlife, and motivated by an urge to preserve them, Anne’s astonishingly realistic life-size sculptures capture the experience of seeing these animals up close without exploiting them. Her sculpted work using natural materials and clay, provides a humane alternative to big game trophy hunting and taxidermy.
She combines her talents in painting, tapestry weaving and illustration with an intuitive attention to the smallest detail to truly bring her sculptures to life. She has created lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, cheetahs, bobcats, lynxes, pumas, elephants, rhinos, bears, water buffalo, bison, moose, wolves, coyotes and more—but she feels closest to the big cats. Anne graduated with honors at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in 1989. It was then that she met Don Moore...

Museum sculpture of the master of Mauer
Austrian Danube Region
Around 1500/20
Lime wood, carved full round
Height 55 cm
Provenance:
Hofstätter Collection, Vienna
The masterful sculpture was made in the workshop of the master of the altar of Mauer around 1500 in Lower Austria. It can be located in the context of the Danube school of the first third of the 16th century, was carved from limewood and is 55 cm tall. Since there are no attributes or context, it is an unknown figure of a carved altar.
The master of the altar of Mauer is an anonymous Gothic carver who was active between 1500 and 1525 and received this so-called emergency name through the altar for the parish and pilgrimage church of Mauer near Melk. This winged altar was probably commissioned by Göttweig Abbey in the 1470s and is made of lime wood. It shows an expression in the transition from late Gothic to early Renaissance and is considered the most important carved altar in Lower Austria, created between 1510-15.
The figure presented here is very related in its design to the figures of the altar of Mauer. In lively-moving form, the male figure turns his upper body to the right, with his head pointing upward, probably toward the sky. The right leg in lunge emerges from under the frock...

Abstract Expressionist Figurative Dancer Welded Metal Sculpture Judith Brown
By Judith Brown
Located in Surfside, FL
Judith Brown, American
"Reveler"
Steel sculpture of a body in motion, dancer
Signed with initials
Initialed "JB"
Base: 11" X 6" X 1.75"
Sculpture: 16" X 10" X 10"
Judith Brown (December 17, 1931 – May 11, 1992) was an American dancer and a woman AbEx sculptor who was drawn to images of the body in motion and its effect on the cloth surrounding it. She welded crushed automobile scrap metal into energetic moving torsos, horses, and flying draperies. "One of the things that made Judy stand out as an artist was her ability to work in many different mediums. Some of this was by choice, and sometimes it was by necessity. Her surroundings often dictated what medium she could work with at any given time. After all, you can't bring you're welding gear with you to Rome ."Brown attended Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York (B.A., 1954), where she learned to weld from her teacher, Theodore Roszak, a pioneering abstract expressionist sculptor. Her style similar to Leonard Baskin and John Chamberlain. Figurative abstract expressionism. Brown's work was exhibited widely throughout the United States and Europe, featured in group shows at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, the Boston Arts Festival, The New Britain Museum of American Art, and many other galleries and museums. Brown's one-person exhibitions include shows at Zygos Gallery in Cyprus and Galeriea de Antonio Souza in Mexico City, as well as galleries and museums in Vermont, Florida, and New York City. Brown's artwork was also displayed in windows at Tiffany's and Bonwit Teller in their New York City department stores.
In addition to displaying her work in exhibition settings, Brown received many public and private commissions throughout her career. Her public commissions may be found in many U.S. states including New York, Vermont, New Jersey, Virginia, Georgia, and California; and she has work currently housed with several museums and corporations including the Pepsi Company, Marriott Corporation, Dartmouth College, Vermont Law School, Jewish Museum, and the Museum of Dance.

Large Neapolitan 19th Century Hardwood Sculpture of a Crèche Camel.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large, Neapolitan, late 19th Century hardwood sculpture of a camel. Artist unknown.
A beautifully patinated hardwood sculpture. The sculpture is extremely charming and having been handled for over a century has a lovely warm and tactile patina. It is particularly nice too see the work of the craftsperson in the adze and chisel marks along the body of the sculpture. The Italians and most notably the area around Naples has a long and storied tradition in the creation of sculptures for Nativity Scenes. This camel is both an endearing item and a piece of social history.
A wonderful addition in its own right to the traditional Christmas scene, by tradition this sculpture was used as a maquette for the production of papier-maché models used in Christmas Creches which have such a long tradition in Italy and throughout the world. Wonderfully carved this piece was used to create hollow models out of papier-maché which were more affordable for this Christmas tradition. Hundreds of strips of papier-maché would be layered onto the figure in all directions. Then using a sharp tool the papier-maché was pushed into all the crevices of the sculpture to give it crisp detail. Once the layers of paper were dry the papier-maché was cut at certain points and lifted off the sculpture. Then finally the resulting body parts were glued back together, painted and patinated ready to be placed in the crèche scene.
In the Christian tradition, a nativity scene (also known as a manger scene...

Guilt of Innocence (Postage Due Mr. Lee), wood and steel sculpture, Troy Williams
Located in Santa Fe, NM
“Guilt of Innocence” (Postage Due Mr. Lee)
Most of us don’t realize the true cost of the lifestyle we enjoy. There is a price paid by humanity that lives in our shadow. Unfair trade practices have stripped multitudes from their means of subsistence, thus forcing them to bow down to the system that has taken from them a meaningful life. The sculpture “Guilt of Innocence” depicts the American consumer’s role in this tragedy.
Who is Mr. Lee?
Lee Kyung was a South Korean farmer whose family farm is now a parking lot due to the WTO and unfair trade practices. Farmers in South Korea, who once made a good middle class living on their land, are now impoverished by the dumping...
