About the Item

Pablo Picasso is one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, known for his experiments in painting and sculpture. His mid-century ceramics combine traditional pottery craftsmanship with Picasso’s distinctive artistic style. The vase “Chouetton (Young Wood Owl)” was created by Pablo Picasso in 1952 at the Madoura workshop in France. It is made of white earthenware and decorated with hand-painted oxides (brown and black) with knife engraving on white enamel. The vase features two expressive owl faces, a characteristic motif in Picasso’s ceramic works, which have become some of his most sought-after pieces over time. The History: In 1946, while on vacation with Françoise Gilot in the south of France, Picasso met Georges and Suzanne Ramié, the owners of the Madoura pottery studio in Vallauris. They invited the artist into their workshop, where he created several ceramic pieces. This encounter so captivated Picasso that he returned to the workshop a year later with sketches and new ideas. As a result, he began working regularly at Madoura, producing unique ceramic works, including a series of vases featuring owls. The underside of the vase bears Picasso’s signature and marking, “Edition Picasso Madoura”, as well as the official stamps “Madoura Plein Feu / Edition Picasso”, confirming its authenticity. The work is documented in the “Catalogue Raisonné de l’Oeuvre Céramique de Picasso de 1947 à 1971” by Alain Ramié (A.R.), Galerie Madoura, 1988. In the catalogue, the piece is listed as number 135. The vase is from a limited edition of 500 pieces. You are invited to become part of Picasso's enduring legacy by acquiring one of his pieces from this series.
