About the Item
19th Century Grand Tour after the Antique
Figure of Sophocles
Bronze with green patination
Signed F. Barbidienne, Fondeur
25 x 8.5 x 6.5 inches
Standing figure of the Greek poet, wearing chiton, with a bag of his plays at his feet.
A Roman copy made about 330 B.C. is housed by the Roman Vatican Museums.
Sophocles was an ancient Greek tragedian known as one of three from whom at least one play has survived in full. His first plays were written later than, or contemporary with, those of Aeschylus and earlier than, or contemporary with, those of Euripides.
The Grand Tour style is defined by the types of objects that travelers brought back to their homes. These items were not only souvenirs but also served as decorative focal points: Sculptures and Busts: Marble or plaster busts of Roman emperors, philosophers, and mythological figures were common acquisitions.
