About the Item

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. Brimming with narrative energy, “Pickingfisher” plunges into a moment of motion stilled in flight, as a vibrant kingfisher pierces through the painted surface. The bird, rendered in electric blue and deep amber tones, seems to break through a tear in the canvas, beak first, disrupting the visual plane with elegant force. The clever illusion invites the viewer into a world just beyond the visible, one in which nature interrupts the ordinary. Sanderman’s craftsmanship lies in his ability to sculpt illusion, merging painterly detail with three-dimensional realism. The feathers are meticulously textured, while the dramatic tear in the canvas becomes a portal to unseen depths. The kingfisher’s arched wings and pointed trajectory imply speed and precision, yet the moment feels suspended—as if we’ve caught the instant between intent and impact. “Pickingfisher” is a tribute to movement, instinct, and the idea that beauty often arrives unexpectedly. It fuses technique with imagination, drawing the viewer into a delicate drama set against the starkness of a white void. This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. Artist biography: Painter/sculptor Henk Jan Sanderman (1975), born in the Netherlands, currently lives and works in a small town in the middle of Holland. In his studio he renders oil paintings, as well as casting sculptures in porcelain and bronze. The artist’s works have an endearing ambience, influenced with their light-hearted aspects. Current works demonstrative innovative merging of the canvas and sculpture, providing a contemporary body of installations. His works has been featured at Palet magazine, Atelier magazine, Coda museum, Stadsmuseum Harderwijk and museum De Fundatie. In 2014 Henk Jan participated in the television program "Sterren op het Doek" and created a portrait of Seth Gaaikema.
