Latin American Abstract Geometric Chrome Bronze Architectural Sculpture E. Tafur
Located in Surfside, FL
Edgar Tafur (Colombian, 1929 - 2007)
Chrome Over Bronze Sculpture
Undated, signed on side near bottom, abstract sculpture
Dimensions: Height: 12 3/4 inches, Width: 4 inches, Depth: 3 3/4 inches
Mod Space Age Chrome over Bronze Abstract Architectural Totem Cast Sculpture
Edgar Alonso Tafur, Latin American artist born and raised in Cali. Colombia, was first trained as an architect at the University of the Andes, but shortly thereafter switched his focus to sculpture. It is this work which brought Tafur to the United States, first to study at the University of Florida and then to Oklahoma where he was featured in a solo exhibition at the Oklahoma Art Center in 1966. Alluding his architectural roots, Tafurs sculptures possess a marked structural form, drawing on themes of positive and negative space. In addition to his work as a sculptor, Tafur was well known for his modernist concept designs, consisting of fountains and architectural murals commissioned by fellow architects. “Each of his works is an understatement of the principles of architecture, which is itself sculptural. Tafur’s sensitivity towards the play of light and shadow on the surfaces, his relationship of positive and negative spaces, and his fluid play of rhythms all lend themselves dramatically to an exciting visual statement. His simplicity and modernism evokes the opinion of the renowned architect, Mies Van der Rohe: ‘less is more.'” Patric Shannon, Director, Oklahoma Art Center
While some of his work has a brutalist quality to it it is generally more abstract geometric, masculine with polished chrome surfaces, enamel and some with great, strong colors. This has an abstract flora, cactus like shape to it. He is from the generation of Colombian artists who rose to prominence in the mid 20th century which included Fernando Botero, Doris Salcedo, Oscar Murillo, Antonio Caro...

Modernist Detroit Table Sculpture Wood Collage Box Assemblage Americordo Copper
Located in Surfside, FL
Copper and wood box. "Americordo #7" is composed of copper tiles inlaid to the bottom half of the box and on the top rests a patinated etched copper or bronze circle. The box when closed measures to be 17" Sq. x 3.5" H.
David Barr (1939-2015) is an American sculptor and painter from Detroit, MI. Known for constructivist sculpture, architecture and surrealist, assemblage box sculpture collage works. Born in 1939, Barr is an internationally known artists and has created many installations in natural settings. Vault took over a year to complete. His sculptures represent mathematics, geography and structurist nature, and otherwise known as "geo-structures." This one is kinetic and can be moved around. Barr is a graduate of Wayne State University and recipient of the WSU Distinguished Alumni Award. Influenced by sculptor Charles Biederman. In 1995 he founded the Michigan Legacy Art Park, and has pieces at the Chrysler World Headquarters, Flint's Bishop Airport, the Detroit Zoo, the State of Michigan Historical Museum and the Meadowbrook Festival Grounds
Barr earned a master’s of fine arts degree from Wayne State University and was an associate professor of sculpture at Macomb Community College in Warren for 37 years.
He worked on perhaps the largest sculpture in the world, the Four Corners Project, with installations at Greenland, Africa, Irian Jaya (New Guinea) and Easter Island. His sculptures are located all over the state of Michigan, but perhaps his most recognizable is Transcending, a blend of bronze, steel and granite that acknowledges the contributions of Detroit’s laborers and skilled tradespeople.
David Barr is the founder of Michigan Legacy Art Park. David’s career as an artist, instructor, author and global thinker has crossed borders around the world, bringing people and ideas together.
Over fifty years as a sculptor, David created a body of work that includes hundreds of wall-hanging structurist reliefs, sculptures for public spaces (such as Transcending in Hart Plaza, Detroit done with Sergio De Giusti), works for private collections, massive global projects (such as The Four Corners Project) and Michigan Legacy Art Park. David’s studio was in Detroit for fifteen years until he realized he needed nature as a source of inspiration. In 1977 he bought 4 acres of land in rural Oakland County (now Novi) and in 1979 built his home, a contemporary structure that has become the centerpiece of his own art park. His work is included in the collection of outdoor sculptures at The Dennos Museum Center along with Clement Meadmore, Hanna Stiebel...

Erinnerungen an einen Mord
Located in Wien, 9
Curt Stenvert was an Austrian avant-garde artist who initially worked as a painter. His artistic practice gradually expanded to include cinematic works and object art. His works are still internationally acclaimed today.
He received his artistic training through his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He studied there with Albert Paris Gütersloh and Fritz Wotruba, which enabled him to deal with aspects of movement and perspective. This resulted in his aluminium plexiglass sculptures. His cinematic works were also influenced by his preoccupation with movement. Movement became a central motif in his works. Stenvert introduces the viewer to the biological, psychological, sociological and philosophical conditions of human existence. He developed experimental, feature-length and documentary films, which won international awards. He had solo museum exhibitions in Sweden, Italy and Germany and took part in the 1966 Venice Biennale. The social aspect preoccupied Stenvert throughout and he translated his impressions and thoughts of student unrest, social protests...

Lucite Flower by Herb Elsky- 1983
Located in Pasadena, CA
This rare Lucite resin sculpture, bearing the signature of Herb Elsky and dated 1983 on its base, portrays a flower and its stem intricately carved within two acrylic blocks joined together. It could be a phantasmal sunflower in the color of crystal. The light passes through, and flows through the flower, the shape of its head opening to the sky, its central bud, the back of its petals embellished by veins, and its foot on which fine stem details are engraved.
The back of the flower boasts a rougher texture.
Depending on the angle of view, the different sources of light, sun, or electrical light the flower no longer gives itself only in this transparency close to crystal but becomes tinged with yellows, or red like the sofa behind it. It is fascinating!
Herb Elsky is an artist who, for several decades specialized in abstract visual art, but in more recent years combining sight and sound...

Set of Four Pressed Botanical Specimens, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
These four botanical specimens from the herbarium of A. Brun were hand-picked, pressed and preserved in the late-19th century. Each plant specimen is elegantly presented within a fine hardwood frame and includes a hand-written taxonomy card with the plant’s scientific name, family, habitat, and date collected. Originally used to document the plant diversity of a particular geographic area, herbariums wonderfully preserve the beauty of nature, making them quite a captivating and charming addition to any wall.

Randy Shull is an artist who works fluidly between a variety of
mediums, including furniture design, spatial design, painting, and
landscape design. He is highly acclaimed for his rich and sensual use
of color and space. Awarded a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship
in 1994, an NEA Southern Arts Federation grant in 1995, and a master
residency at Oregon School of Arts & Crafts in Portland, Randy has
also had four solo shows in New York in the past decade. His work is
included in a number of important museum collections including The
Brooklyn Museum; The High Museum in Atlanta; The Renwick Museum of
American Art in Washington, D.C.; The Mint Museum of Craft & Design in
Charlotte; Racine Museum of Art; The Gregg Museum of Art & Design, and
Museum of Art and Design in New York. Randy stays involved in the
local community by serving on the board of the Asheville Art Museum.
Randy maintains studios in Asheville, NC and Merida, Mexico.
In 2008 and 2009 Randy’s work was the subject of a twenty-year
retrospective that opened on January 24th at the Gregg Museum of Art &
Design at NC State, and traveled to the San Francisco Museum of Craft
& Design as well as The Bellview Art Museum and The Ogden Museum of
Southern Art. Reviews of the exhibition can be found in the Raleigh
News and Observer and the San Francisco Chronicle.
The craft revival in the 1920s brought a renewed interest in
traditional native crafts and folk art at places like the John C.
Campbell Folk School and Penland School of Crafts. Using pocket
knives, carvers transformed scraps of wood into dolls and toys for
their children. As tourism developed, carving became an important
source of income, and successful carving centers developed in
Cherokee, Asheville, Tryon and Brasstown.
Seaborn Bradley was known for making war clubs, tomahawks and walking
sticks; Will West Long and his son Allen made masks used in native
celebrations; and Hayes Lossiah crafted traditional Cherokee blowguns,
darts, bows and arrows. Goingback Chiltoskey and Amanda Crowe became
influential teachers for the Cherokee community. Eleanor Vance and
Charlotte Yale, coming to N.C. most likely as missionaries,
established Biltmore Estate Industries in Asheville in 1905, initially
focusing their production on carving and later adding weaving. In
1915, the pair moved south of Asheville to establish Tryon Toy-Makers
and Wood-Carvers. In the 1930s, several folk art wood carvers were known in and around Brasstown, home of the John C. Campbell Folk School, including
Floyd Laney, William Julius “W. J.” Martin, who carved traditional
animals, and influential carving teacher Parker Fisher. Other carvers,
like Herman and Mabel Estes, made mostly functional items including
serving platters. “Brasstown Carvers” was established in the 1950s,
known for its small, highly polished animals and nativity scene
figures. Today, the Southern Highlands Craft Guild and Piedmont
Craftsmen give visibility to the finest wood artists in the state. The
aptly named Woody family, now in its seventh generation of crafting
traditional wooden rockers and chairs by hand without nails or glue,
maintains its business in Spruce Pine while the work of high-end
Asheville furniture artists like Randy Shull and Brent Skidmore
appears in venues like the Mint Museum Uptown in Charlotte. Renowned
Saluda woodturner Stoney Lamar creates art with a lathe, and Bynum
outsider artist Clyde Jones invents “critters” with his chainsaw. All
have earned international recognition. A blurring of lines between
craft and visual art also is evident today. Casar resident Bob Trotman...
