Nubian Water Carrier in Gilt & Patinated Bronze Attributed Graux-Marly Foundry
Located in New York, NY
Parcel gilt and patinated bronze figural statue of a Nubian Water carrier with a pitcher on her shoulder. The contrast between the deep bronze and bright gilding is incredibly striking. The woman drips in gold jewelry and drapery, wearing arm bangles, a large necklace and outrageous earrings. Beautifully casted, the piece's details are crisp and well defined, with beautiful even patinas and gilding. She stands atop an exquisitely carved, two toned, wooden base made of three sections. A fluted column with a small garland nestled within each flute makes up the main body, while a bellied band carved to mimic tufted cushions or upholstery is sandwiched between the column and a black hexagonal ped.
Attributed to the Graux-Marly Foundry. Based at 8 rue du Parc-Royal in Paris in 1860, started by Jules Graux-Marly and continued by his sons into the later 19th Century. The firm exhibited at the 1878 Paris Exhibition and was well-respected for both their figurative sculptures and decorative ornaments.

Italian Big Scale Hand Carved Table Top Wood Lion Sculpture
Located in Firenze, IT
This 19th century big scale Italian animalier sculpure features a lion striding forward on a root-wood base, snarling with open mouth and expressive eyes enlivening its rippling mane with an extremely realistic sense of motion. The wooden statue, wonderful as a table top, is entirely hand carved in the round in a single block of solid olive wood, sign of high quality and sculptural artisanal mastery. An original whimsical and impressive centerpiece clearly sculpted by a true artist who carved the block of wood creating this figure of the proudest feline boasting a detailed study of the lion's anatomy. The features on the face, mane, muscles, tail and the paws are still distinctive and full of character as well as the beautifully carved stand. This sculpture boasts smooth surface and a warm patina developed over centuries and exudes wonderful quality and timelessness of the ancient world. The rich original patina brings further intrigue to its intricately carved details.

Palissy Majolica Bowl Snake Spider Frog Caterpillar Butterfly Lizard
Located in Detroit, MI
This Jose A Cunha Portuguese Palissy Majolica plate features a snake, spider, frog, caterpillar, and butterfly on green shredded clay ground. The piece bears the maker's marks for Jose A Cunha pottery. Palissy ware is a style of ceramics that is also known as rusticware due to their earth-toned palettes and naturalistic plant and animal scenes that are cast to it. The style was coined in reference to the 16th century French potter Bernard Palissy and experienced a significant revival in the 19th century thanks to Charles-Jean Avisseau. It's strongest revival however was in Portugal where it was produced by the potteries of Mafra, Jose A. Cunha, Alves, José Francisco de Sousa...
