About the Item

Listening at the Cliffside, Original Contemporary Wooden Mixed Media Sculpture 20" x 65" x 42" (HxWxD) Wood, Stone, String, Brass Bell, Glass Bottle, Clear Finish In this highly conceptual work, artist Todd McCollister has combined a myriad of elements to depict a narrative scene that makes the viewer pause. Inspired by historical elements, the work explores space, structure, and sound. A small boat-shaped after shave bottle serves as a floating element beneath a brass bell. A wall of undulating wood creates the cliffside, while more delicate beams of wood jut behind the piece, somehow evoking both fragility and the integrity of industrial engineering at work. Artist Commentary: This piece started as a reference to the "acoustic mirror" listening stations on the southeast coast of England. These huge concrete parabolic reflectors focus sound to a small point. During the second world war, the British posted soldiers at the focus of each one, where they would listen for German boats or planes approaching over the sea and hear them much earlier than normal. Obviously my sculpture has strayed pretty far from that original inspiration. About the Artist: Like life, Todd McCollister's work puts ordinary characters in extraordinary situations. Many of them are explorers or adventurers, like all of us out in the world trying to achieve goals or rewards without clear rules and directions. They bravely face isolation, defeat, adversity, and success. They might even be absent, for the moment, from their own story. Some of their tasks may be puzzling, some are done badly, and some are alarmingly adept. Most have a sincere optimism that comes from fairy tales, magic realism, and old-fashioned legends. McCollister earned a BFA in Sculpture and Photography in 1996 from Texas Christian University and an MFA in Sculpture in 2000 from Stony Brook University. He then moved to New York City, first pursuing Sculpture and shifting to Furniture in 2006. In 2014 he brought what he learned back to his hometown of Omaha, NE, and founded Long Grain Furniture. Since the Pandemic, his focus has shifted back to Sculpture, his first passion. He is an active member of the Omaha art community and believes in supporting his fellow artists as a path to everyone’s success. He’s currently running a monthly event series called “Final Fridays at Todd’s,” aimed at bringing the Omaha art community together to make us all stronger, through networking and sharing experience and information.

A horse, saddled but riderless, badly burned, was descending stairs, almost home. Around his neck was a beautiful string of fish...

Tower of Song, abstract geometric wooden sculpture
Located in New York, NY
Milled wood, encaustic, string and acrylic. Joe Sultan started sculpting later in life after building a home in the Hudson Valley in 2012. He trained, worked as an architect and led his own firms for over 20 years starting in 1980, his focus was special needs housing and other government sponsored commissions.  A second career started in 2001 as owner and CEO of Chilewich, the design brand best known for beautiful and functional home textiles. He built their factory in Georgia where all the products are made, with machines and processes of his design. He stepped down as CEO in May of 2022. During all phases of his career Joe made art, first engraving and drawing before turning to sculpture. But it was at the Hudson Valley house that he turned exclusively to sculpture using the abundant wood of his land. He mills the wood into sticks, planks and blocks. The milling leaves ridges, valleys and cambers making every raw piece, unique. Sculptures start by putting 2 random sticks together, there’s no plan to start with, or drawings. But there’s always an idea about form, space or memory that guides them. The idea solidifies as the piece grows and eventually supersedes initial randomness. All the work contain the markings of its making.  Joe’s work was first shown at Susan Eley Fine Art...
