Biography :
The twins Jan and Joël Martel, born March 5, 1896 in Nantes and died respectively on March 16 and September 25, 1966 in Bois-de-Céné, were both of them French sculptors and decorators. As Parisian artists, they spent long moments in Vendée region, in their Mollin property, or in Saint-Jean-de-Monts, city in which one can see their last monumental work: "The Sea Birds". Their works were sculptures, monuments or fountains of Art Deco or Cubist inspiration. They also realized around 1920 interior fittings for villas.
Jan and Joel Martel shared the same workshop and their work to the point of signing their compositions only by "Martel". The Martel brothers...

Popeye Sailor European Sculpture Ebony and Metal Art Deco Hagenauer
Located in Oakland, CA
Popeye the Sailor is a European sculpture in the Hagenauer style made of Ebony wood and metal in the Art Deco style. We have had a few pieces in this treatment, including style and materials. They are scarce to find. This one is exciting since it is an homage to the character of Popeye. This sculpture has a slightly cubist feeling with black ebony and silver treatment, including the navy anchor on its arm, obviously inspired by the original Popeye.
It’s not a widely known fact that a natural person inspired E.C. Segar, the creator of Popeye. We have discovered that it was fashioned to resemble this man, Frank “Rocky” Fiegel, whose parents immigrated from Poland to the United States. Rocky was born in 1868-1947, and as an adult, he joined the Navy. He was considered very strong and smoked a pipe, one of the characteristics of the cartoon Popeye, which became such an essential icon of protection, not allowing bullying or being bullied.
This Popeye Sailor sculpture...

The photograph is framed to the line and crop indicated by the photographer on the print, behind museum quality UV non-reflective glass. (A Fresson print is a type of photographic printing, created in 1899, that has been passed down in the family for four generations. Still to this day, the Fresson family keeps some elements of the process a secret but make sure it stays alive. Located in the outskirts of Paris, their workshop is the only one in the world to produce such prints.)
Albin-Guillot studied drawing and painting before becoming interested in photography. In 1925, she went on to have the first one-person exhibition at the Paris Autumn Salon. She also served as president of the French Societe des Artistes Photographes and in June 1928, was included in the first independent Salon of Photography in Paris. Published in 1932, she took a series of male nudes taken for Henry de Motherlant’s La Deesse Cypris. The strongly cropped images in which the male nudes fill the entire frame accompany the author’s text about sensuality. In 1933, she collaborated with the poet Paul Valery...
