Contemporary Fauvist Impressionist pastel of colourful landscape by Belgian artist Francis Besson. Signed to the very bottom right and presented in a custom white wood and patinated frame.
A magnificent colourscape of reds, russets, blues, oranges and black. Whirls of colour shape this gorgeously sumptuous pastel of a landscape. The contrast between colour, light and shade make for a wonderfully impactful composition. The use of pastel softens the whole effect and gives an impressionistic feeling.
Besson was born in Dundee (Scotland) in 1943 however as a young child moved to Belgium where he later became famous as an actor. His family kept a second home in Cotignac in Provence which he visited often until finally going to live there himself in the early 2000s.
Francis Besson now lives and works in the beautiful village of Cotignac in Provence in the south of France. His often impressionistic almost pointillist work is inspired by the nature he sees around him in this lovely part of the world. The intensity of the light , the rocks and forests of Provence all feature in his paintings.
He is known for both landscapes and abstract works and has often collaborated with other local artists.

This painting while clearly figurative bears the influence of the emerging Abstract expressionist movement.
Janet Ament De La Roche was born in Hollywood, CA on December 31, 1916. Janet first studied in Los Angeles at Otis and Chouinard art institutes. While studying at Jepson Art Institute in 1947, she met and soon married artist, Victor Di Gesu. Janet de La Roche was often called one of the last Bohemians. She was an artist as well as an avid Flamenco dancer. The couple spent four years in Europe and further studied in Paris at Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Andre Lhote Institute, and in Barcelona at Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Jorge .She also studied with the artist, Ejnar Hansen. as well as with Earl Kerkam, Yves Brayer, Jean Aujame, Edouard Goerg, F.Tolles Chamberlin and George Stanley. Upon returning to California in 1956, they settled on the Monterey Peninsula and built a home in Pacific Grove. She exhibited widely and with much success, including at the Salon d'Automne (1954), the Salon des Artes Decoratifs, Museum of Modern Art, Paris, (1955), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She was the winner of the Prix Othon Friesz. Matisse's striking linocut shows Alexina "Teeny" Duchamp, the second wife of artist and pioneer of the ready-made, Marcel Duchamp. She was married to Pierre Matisse, Henri Matisse's eldest son, first and they had three children, Jacqueline, Paul and Peter. They separated in 1949 but Matisse was incredibly fond of his daughter-in-law until his death in 1954.
Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) is primarily known as the founder of the Fauvist movement, a result of Impressionism, whose works fundamentally altered the course of Modern Art in the late 20th Century. Innovative in his original treatment of the human figure and an expressive use of color, Matisse forged his own pictorial language. Matisse's career can be divided into several stylistic periods, but he remained focused on discovering “the essential character of things” through his art.
Matisse considered his drawing to be a very intimate means of expression. The method of artistic execution — whether it was charcoal, pencil, crayon, etcher’s burin, lithographic tusche or paper cut — varied according to the subject and personal circumstance. His favorite subjects were evocative or erotic — the female form, the nude figure or a beautiful head of a favorite model.
