Gertrude S.
Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: Robert Indiana (American, born 1928) Title: "Gertrude S." Year: 1977 Medium: Original color lithograph Edition: Numbered 32/150 in pencil Paper: Arches Image size: 18 x 14 inches paper size: 23.65 x 19.5 inches Signature: Hand signed in pencil by the artist Publisher: Leon Amiel, New York Printer: Fernand Mourlot, Paris Condition: It is in excellent condition, has never been framed. Description: From the suite "The Mother of All Us" About the artist: Robert Indiana was born in New Castle, Indiana, in 1928. His family name was Clark but he adopted the name of his native state early in his career. His father worked for a Phillips 66 gas station and his mother ran a diner. He began his studies in art in 1945 at the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and then at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, New York. He then moved to Chicago and continued his studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He also studied at the Skowhgan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, the Edinburgh College of Art and London University, eventually moving to New York City in 1956. A major Pop Artist, his work is characterized by the use of words and relatively flat paint with no brush strokes. This cold and somewhat mechanical approach to painting in which the words are often stenciled into the design probably was influenced by street signs, pinball machines, the commercial stenciling process used in printing and advertisements. In fact, Indiana calls himself "a painter of signs". He uses the common everyday symbols and words of America and paints them as brilliantly colored pop art paintings. His work comments in an ironic fashion on American life and culture, often making pointed political statements about American society. The words in his painting are usually simple and short words, sometimes with clear meaning and other times arranged in an ambiguous fashion to project multiple meanings, and occasionally involve puns. It is interesting to try to put his "words" together to get a sense of the meaning. For instance, in The Triumph of Tira, painted in, 1960-61, the artist presents four circles with four squares inside them and four stars inside the squares. There is one word in each star. The upper left says "Law"; the upper right says "Cat"; the lower left says "Men"; and the lower right says "Sex." Of course it is hard to understand the relationship between the words, and as you begin to speculate on what it might mean, a number of possible interpretations evolve. Other works have more obvious meanings, sometimes political. One painting shows an outline of the State of Alabama with Selma marked in the right location. The words "Just as in the anatomy of man, every nation must have its hind part", are stenciled around the map. This is a reference to the march on Selma, which was an important event in the Civil Rights Movement during the 60's. Indiana's most famous painting is of the word "Love". It is painted with the LO on the top and VE on the bottom. This painting was used as a design for an American postage stamp...

ROSALINA (BACK)

inkjet print on satin paper, laminted in luster matte. Edition of 5 This body of work was born from a chance encounter between the artist, Ruby Rumié, and Dominga Torres Tehran, a woman who for more than 45 years has walked the city streets selling fish. Dominga caught the attention of the artist for her unique and natural beauty. For nearly half a century this woman worked unnoticed, but at that moment, she completely captivated Rumié. Weaving Streets is an attempt to rescue women like Dominga from oblivion and invisibility - women who have spent valuable years of their lives as ambulant street vendors, permanently wandering the neighborhoods of the city. Aptly named, “Weaving Streets” references the phrase used by grandmothers to describe those who walked the city streets often. Rumié’s goal is to present new views on the vendors and their environment. The viewer’s encounter with these women will be different for the exhibition – it will be special. Viewers will see for the first time what has always been there, like running a thin veil between the visible and the invisible, a veil of old and constant stereotypes that keep us numb, or blind, so we ignore the marvelous and different realities. “Problems such as gender violence, gentrification, social barriers and discrimination constitute a constant concern which I attempt to uncover through my work, by means of large installations where I use repetition as a platform for protest; bodies as objects of mass consumption that reveal the disappearance of our intangible heritage, and photographs to suggest the enigma of social stratification, all of these intend to stimulate reflection, playfulness, visual pleasure, emotion and inquiry” explains Rumié. Rumié condenses the collected material into a Corpus, a historical archival manner, comprised of five volumes that unfold spatially in the gallery. Photo albums picturing each participant, stamp albums...

ABOUT: In Gordon’s third exhibition, his remarkable capacity for discovery and self-described “pathological curiosity” makes for an entirely unpredictable series of photographs, while the small size of the gelatin silver prints emphasizes their detailed nature and enhances the mysterious quality generated by his choice in cameras (namely, the increasingly popular Holga film camera). Stettinius’ wry sense of humor, references to popular culture, and use of kitschy subject matter permeate the entire black and white exhibition. The invitational image, “Yoda’s Garden”, is a perfect emblem of the exhibition’s mischievously comedic representation of Americana. In this image, a scarecrow proudly stands at the center of a growing cornfield, a gingham dress wrapping its body and a mask of the popular Star Wars character “Yoda” serving as its head. Although the references to both Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz may appear staged, Stettinius’ photography is anything but. Stettinius frequently finds inspiration in road trips, generating an aesthetic with the satirical playfulness of David Graham or Ralph Meatyard. This spontaneous, anthropological approach to photography can be seen in several of the pieces in Stettinius’ collection. This is perhaps most notably found in “Fast Money...

Taking Pictures
Located in San Francisco, CA
This photograph "Taking Pictures" c.1980 is an original gelatin silver print by famous German photographer and artist Michael Andreas Russ, born 1945. The photograph size is 7.65 x 12 inches, sheet size is 8.5 x 12.65 inches. It is in excellent condition. About Michael Andreas Russ. Michael Andreas Russ (born January 1945Taking Pictures in Berlin) is an German/American photographer, photo designer and film director. Russ' career as a photographer began in New York in the late 1960s where he photographed his fellow acting students. Self-taught, he eventually moved to his own studio off Union Square, Manhattan and connected with the local underground art scene. Photograph by Russ was published on the cover of “Art Direction Magazine of Visual Communication” with a Gertrude Stein quotation: “The composition in which we live makes the art which we see and hear” In his early years Russ focused on men's fashion magazines and erotic sequential photographic scenes for Playboy Press books. He eventually experimented with distinctive photographic techniques, turning 35mm black and white film into chemically toned, masked, solarized and hand colored, one of a kind silver gelatin prints. These 'TinTones' as Russ would call them eventually became the trademark of his work. They were published in popular fashion and lifestyle magazines and brought him international recognition in the art world. His work was published in major fashion, lifestyle and avant-garde magazines, GUNNARS, Mode International, Mode Avant Guarde, PHOTO Magazine, Zoom (photography magazine), as well as German Playboy (magazine), Photo Reporter and cover art to IL Magazine. He also contributed sequential 'sujets de chambre' to Vogue magazine His erotic postcard edition "The Compagnie" became part of the permanent collection of the Musée des arts décoratifs de Paris, an annex to the Louvre museum.
