Oprah had been heard saying this was the best thing since 64 Crayola Crayons and that she cried tears of joy upon hearing the news that this would become a reality. This body of work was born from a chance encounter between the artist, Ruby Rumié, and Dominga Torres Tehran, a woman who for more than 45 years has walked the city streets selling fish. Dominga caught the attention of the artist for her unique and natural beauty. For nearly half a century this woman worked unnoticed, but at that moment, she completely captivated Rumié.
Weaving Streets is an attempt to rescue women like Dominga from oblivion and invisibility - women who have spent valuable years of their lives as ambulant street vendors, permanently wandering the neighborhoods of the city. Aptly named, “Weaving Streets” references the phrase used by grandmothers to describe those who walked the city streets often.
Rumié’s goal is to present new views on the vendors and their environment. The viewer’s encounter with these women will be different for the exhibition – it will be special. Viewers will see for the first time what has always been there, like running a thin veil between the visible and the invisible, a veil of old and constant stereotypes that keep us numb, or blind, so we ignore the marvelous and different realities.
“Problems such as gender violence, gentrification, social barriers and discrimination constitute a constant concern which I attempt to uncover through my work, by means of large installations where I use repetition as a platform for protest; bodies as objects of mass consumption that reveal the disappearance of our intangible heritage, and photographs to suggest the enigma of social stratification, all of these intend to stimulate reflection, playfulness, visual pleasure, emotion and inquiry” explains Rumié.

This minimalist circular archival pigment print depiccting a rusted length of chain is the work of Hudson Valley-based photographer David Halliday. Halliday adopts a nautical theme with this photograph, a choice that is consistent with much of his photography. Halliday splits the background of the composition horizontally and diametrically into textured taupe and non-textured white planes, grounding the composition, as ever, in minimalism and sophistication.

Whether traveling to a foreign land, wandering through a neighborhood marketto shop for food, or engaging in convivial conversation with a friend at his home,David Halliday is easily charmed, intrigued, excited, or amused by all that surroundshim. An artful documenter of life, Haliday uses his camera as a tool for recording themultitudinous special moments that capture his attention. Once in the darkroom, heeditorializes his finds, subtly embellishing each image until it somehow evokes thesensation that led him to photograph a subject in the first place.
With the exception of a series of platinum print portraits, Halliday produces all of hisphotographs as sepia toned silver gelatin prints. Both processes are highly trad-itional and, in requiring that the artist avoid the use of any color other than sepia,they stand in sharp contrast to splashier modes such as Cibachrome, Polaroid, or digitally produced Iris prints […]. First, he sent off selections of his work to two national photography annuals and was pleased, indeed surprised, when both indicated they were eager to print his pictures-and did.
But perhaps more important was his becoming a student of the distinguished anthropologist Margaret Mead. To fulfil a term paper requirement in one of her courses, Mr. Heyman submitted a photographic essay that interested the famous professor. Out of this began a friendship and collaboration that continued for more than twenty years.
Their first collaboration began shortly after his graduation from Columbia in 1956, when she invited him to go with her to take pictures in Bali. Other field trips followed: some with Mead and others where he went alone. Since then, ken Heyman has photographed in more than sixty countries. These photographs have appeared in major exhibits and in two books co-authored with Margaret Mead: Family (1965) and World Enough (1976).
Ken Heyman has done photographic assignments for many magazines, including Life. He has worked for the U.S. Information Agency, photographing Alliance for Progress projects in Latin America, and for several photographic agencies, including Rapho Guillumette Agency and Magnum.
Shows of Mr. Heyman's work have been held at the Museum of Modern Art (1963), the Hallmark Gallery (1965), The International Center for Photography in New York City (1976), The Zabriskie Gallery in Paris (1995). Ken Heyman's work has brought him a number of awards including "The World Understanding award," considered to be one of the top awards in photography. It is given "to honor the photographer whose work has contributed most to a better understanding among the world's people."
Ken Heyman has done many books in addition to Family and World Enough. His recent works includes twenty-two books for children written by Ann Morris. The multicultural perspective in these acclaimed books reflects Heyman's varied experience and his ability to sensitively interpret the human condition.
