Guidance
Located in New York, NY
Ben Young’s sculpture fluidly blends glass, concrete, bronze, steel, and light to depict romantic and pensive imagery highlighting the fragility of our climate and its most precious resource – water. Born in Australia and raised in New Zealand, Young is an avid surfer and environmentalist, inspired by a lifetime on and around oceans, bays, and reefs, with an intimate understanding of the challenges our precious ecosystems face. Young’s thought-provoking sculpture shows great range, portraying the beauty and solitude of life on the ocean, haunting depths of the deep sea, and stunning and relaxing upside of island life. Water is many things to many people, which Young encapsulates brilliantly in his work, encompassing themes of sustainability throughout. Using concrete to create mountains, crevasses, sand bars, and cliffs, Young’s innovative use of materials is transportative. With hand-carved glass as his guiding medium, Young amplifies light and its relationship with water – our most sacred element – to create a glowing unity that people from around the world connect with on a personal level, whether they are beachside or in the Desert. Ben Young’s exhibition Delicate Space at Chesterfield Gallery...

Oil Lamp With Heads of Animals - Etching by Filippo de Grado - 18th Century
Located in Roma, IT
Oil Lamp With Heads of Animals from "Antiquities of Herculaneum" is an etching on paper realized by Filippo De Grado in the 18th Century. Signed on the plate. Good conditions. The etching belongs to the print suite “Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed” (original title: “Le Antichità di Ercolano Esposte”), an eight-volume volume of engravings of the finds from the excavation of the ruins of Herculaneum in the Kingdom of Naples (now Campania, Italy). It was published between 1757 and 1792 by the Regia Stamperia, and copies were delivered to selected recipients across Europe. Despite the title, the Antiquity of Herculaneum shows objects from all the excavations undertaken by the Bourbons in the Gulf of Naples. These include Pompeii, Stabia and two sites of Herculaneum: Resina and Portici. The Bourbon King Carlo appointed fifteen scholars creating a new “Herculaneum Academy” to study the artifacts and publish the results of the archaeological excavations of the sites. The engravings are of high quality and the accompanying text shows a large scholarship. They were realized by 25 prominent artists involved by the King to prepare drawings and engravings on the finds, among which we can find Giovanni Elia Morghen, Carlo Nolli, Luigi Vanvitelli, and Giovanni Battista Casanova. The “Antiquities” was designed more to amaze readers with the quality of the objects in the collection of the King of Naples than to be used in research., following and increasing the interest of 18th-century society for the classical culture and Art in particular. Through the exaltation of the classical concept of proportions and harmony, the book was of inspiration to the neoclassical movement in Europe, giving artists and decorators access to a huge shop of Hellenistic motifs.Oil Lamp With Animals...

"Teeny" lithograph by Henri Matissse
Located in Hinsdale, IL
HENRI MATISSE (1869 – 1954) Teeny Duthuit-Garnaud 723 Linocut, c. 1938 From an edition of 1500 Image Size: 12.2” x 9.5” Published in The Homage to Henri Matisse Published by Galerie d’Art Contemporain de Paris Matisse's striking linocut shows Alexina "Teeny" Duchamp, the second wife of artist and pioneer of the ready-made, Marcel Duchamp. She was married to Pierre Matisse, Henri Matisse's eldest son, first and they had three children, Jacqueline, Paul and Peter. They separated in 1949 but Matisse was incredibly fond of his daughter-in-law until his death in 1954. Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) is primarily known as the founder of the Fauvist movement, a result of Impressionism, whose works fundamentally altered the course of Modern Art in the late 20th Century. Innovative in his original treatment of the human figure and an expressive use of color, Matisse forged his own pictorial language. Matisse's career can be divided into several stylistic periods, but he remained focused on discovering “the essential character of things” through his art. Matisse considered his drawing to be a very intimate means of expression. The method of artistic execution — whether it was charcoal, pencil, crayon, etcher’s burin, lithographic tusche or paper cut — varied according to the subject and personal circumstance. His favorite subjects were evocative or erotic — the female form, the nude figure or a beautiful head of a favorite model. Matisse’s etchings...

Frame dimensions 27 3/4 x 32 1/4 in, photo 25 X 31 Provenance: from the Estate of the late Ron and Anne Dees, Fayetteville, North Carolina Ron and Anne Dees were longtime collectors, lovers, and patrons of art. Starting in the late 1990s, they began their art acquisition and collection, focusing substantially on contemporary art. Their affinity for art went far beyond simply collecting and displaying. Ron served as a docent at the esteemed Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, from the late 1990s into the 2000s. In the series "Untitled Memory," Attie revisited his former (and then-deserted) apartment in San Francisco, projecting black-and-white snapshots of his friends and family in spaces that they previously occupied. The desaturated figures have a specter-like appearance and are often depicted in repose or rest, as if in a perpetual state of waiting. The juxtaposition between the projected images and the empty rooms reminds viewers of the fragility of memory, and how sites are activated/changed by presence and absence. Shimon Attie (born Los Angeles in 1957) is an American visual artist. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008, The Rome Prize in 2001 and a Visual Artist Fellowship from Harvard University's Radcliffe Institute for Advance Study in 2007. His work spans a variety of media, including photography, site-specific installation, multiple channel immersive video installation, performance, and new media. Much of Attie's practice explores how a wide range of contemporary media may be used to re-imagine new relationships between space, time, place, and identity. Much, though not all, of Attie's work in the 90s dealt with the history of the second world war. He first garnered significant international attention by slide projecting images of past Jewish life onto contemporary locations in Berlin. More recent projects have involved using a range of media to engage local communities to find new ways of representing their history, memory and potential futures. Attie's artworks and interventions are site-specific and immersive in nature, and tend to engage subject matter that is both social, political and psychological. In 2013, Five monographs have been published on Attie's work, which has also been the subject of a number of films, which have aired on PBS, BBC, and ARD. Since receiving his MFA Degree in 1991, Attie has realized approximately 25 major projects in ten countries around the world. Most recently, in 2013-14, Shimon Attie was awarded the Lee Krasner Lifetime Achievement Award in Art. He was born in 1957 and received an MFA in 1991. In 1991 he moved to Germany from his previous home in Northern California, and began to make work initially about Jewish identity and the history of the second world war. His work later evolved to engage broader issues of memory, place and identity more generally. Shimon Attie moved to New York City in 1997. Shimon Attie's work has been extensively reviewed by a wide variety of publications, including features and/or reviews in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Art in America, Art News, Art Forum, The Village Voice, The Boston Globe, and many others. Yasaman Alipour, writing in "The Brooklyn Rail: Critical Perspectives on Arts, Politics, and Culture", on Shimon Attie's solo exhibition "Facts on the Ground" at Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City: Attie achieves something profound: he presents a unique opportunity to contemplate Israel/Palestine without the distraction that is simultaneously a manifestation of the limitations of visual of written language and the possibilities of their alliance." Norman Kleeblatt, writing in a cover story for "Art in America" "Like many other artists in the wake of Marcel Broodthaers...
