Osvaldo Borsani for Arredamenti Borsani Varedo Daybed in Walnut
By Arredamenti Borsani, Osvaldo Borsani
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Osvaldo Borsani for Arredamenti Borsani Varedo, daybed, model 5767, walnut, fabric, Italy, 1941 This exceedingly rare sofa or daybed, designed by Osvaldo Borsani for Arredamenti Borsani Varedo in 1941, was originally intended for Casa Albonetto in Italy. The designer himself owned a smaller version of this type. This modest daybed serves as a prime example of Borsani's impeccable innovative thinking and his keen sense of harmonious compositions. When it comes to practicality, its defining feature are the adjustable armrests, simultaneously placing the backrest cushions over the lowered armrests. In an easy gesture the sofa is transformed into a daybed. A generous storage compartment is present by raising the seating space upwards. The overall wooden frame in walnut is characterized by rounded contours and clear lines with evenly spaced spindles structuring the piece. Osvaldo Borsani (1911-1985) was an Italian designer and architect, raised by a family of fine furniture makers in Varedo. At the age of 16, he joined his father’s furniture shop, the Atelier di Varedo, which was fully engaged in designing and furnishing homes inspired by the Italian Art Deco movement. The designer of the atelier was the Italian architect Gino Maggioni (1898-1955) who was known for his Viennese Jugendstil orientation of the early 20th century. In the 1930s, he graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and Politecnico di Milano, where he studied Fine Arts and Architecture respectively. In 1932, the family company was renamed ‘Arredamenti Borsani’ and opened its first studio in Milan. During this period, he encountered Avant-Garde artists of various artistic disciplines like Lucio Fontana (1899-1968), Agenore Fabbri (1911-1998), Aligi Sassu (1912-2000), Roberto Crippa (1921-1972), Fausto Melotti (1901-1986), Arnaldo Pomodoro (1926-) and Giò Pomodoro (1930-2002). These collaborations resulted in the creation of furniture and interior design projects with a high-level of craftsmanship and artistry. In 1953, Borsani founded together with his twin brother Fulgenzio Borsani ‘Tecno’, a design and manufacturing company that produced items based on mechanical innovations and refined technicality. The ‘P40’ adjustable lounge chair (1953) has become the ideological manifesto of Borsani's Tecno program, and still remains the best known, exemplary piece in the Tecno catalogue. Other iconic works that were produced by Tecno were created by Gio Ponti (1891-1979), Vico cham...

Madame G, Felt and Wood Chaise Lounge, Drake / Anderson in Stackabl
By Drake/Anderson
Located in New York, NY
Stackabl is a configurator that allows anyone to customize furniture online, an innovative system that allows you to turn high-quality, surplus metal, wood, and felt offcuts from our manufacturing partners – located within a 150-mile-radius – into fully finished, custom works ready to be shipped to your home or project. Aided by algorithms and robotics, the configurator identifies remnant inventory (in the form of metal, wood, and felt) that fits your aesthetic choices. This inventory is then put back through the manufacturers' own machines, and into the hands of their own experts, who execute your design. In the fall of 2020, Maison Gerard paired with Stackabl to show just what can be accomplished with the configurator. Maison Gerard tapped the talents of six prominent designers, asking them to create pieces of their own within Stackabl. Drake / Anderson's madame chaise: Named after Madame Récamier, the 19th-century French socialite noted for her extreme beauty and intellectual prowess as well as her salon, which drew literary and political luminaries of the time, this Modernist take on the chaise lounge invites conversation and stimulates thought. Its crimson hue and sloping shoulders recall the sensuality of neoclassical portraiture, while the slice of shocking pink lending a piquant contrast at the base is an ode to another famous Madame, Elsa Schiaparelli, the provocative fashion designer who popularized the bright shade in her 1940s couture...

Sixteen Foot Mies van der Rohe Barcelona Daybed from the IBM Building
By Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Located in Highland, IN
Here is an extraordinarily rare piece with fantastic provenance– this oversize version of Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona daybed is 16 feet in length and custom fabricated of fiberglass and steel. You would not know that it is fiberglass without touching it. The level of detail and realism is stunning. It’s like an artwork using the principal of transference of material– when an object appears to be made of one expected material, but is really crafted of something totally different, often incongruent with one's expectations. The reason fiberglass was used to make this daybed is that it was created for use in the lobby of Mies van der Rohe’s IBM building at 330 N. Wabash in Chicago. Mies often specified that the public spaces in the buildings he designed be furnished with tables and seating also of his design. In the 1990s the owner of the IBM building hired Chicago designer Judy Niedermaier to decorate the public spaces. Having seen ordinary Barcelona chairs and sofas suffer the abuse of high-traffic spaces see with hundreds of people using them on a daily basis, she opted to something different that would hold up under extreme wear. Interestingly, this was not the first time Niedermaier employed fiberglass in her design work, nor would it be her last. Her firm had used fiberglass for store displays, pots and mannequins in some of their prop and merchandise display work, and then in the early 2000s with the famous downtown Chicago outdoor art projects “Cows on Parade” and “Suite Home Chicago” (fiberglass outdoor furniture...

Børge Mogensen Oak Daybed "Model 190" for Fredericia, Denmark 1950s
By Børge Mogensen, Fredericia
Located in Utrecht, NL
Børge Mogensen designed for function more than sculptural effect. Daybed Model 190 was designed in 1954 for Fredericia Furniture and shows Mogensen’s strong design ideals putting functionality and longevity first. Among the great mid-20th century Danish furniture designers, Børge Mogensen distinguished himself with his faith in traditional values of craftsmanship and honesty of materials. He focused on making pieces that were simple, durable and comfortable, while his chief tenets were quality of construction and simplicity of line. Even though he was a classicist, who believed that furniture forms should evolve from those of historical models, Mogensen shared the aesthetical sensibilities of his most forward-looking colleagues. This daybed has a simple look with understated elegance executed from high-quality materials. The solid oak construction stands on four round, tapered legs and has a lamella top with an upholstered mattress on it. Since the aesthetic is dominated by straight lines, the mattress has button tufting to bring depth into the appearance and accentuate the light coloured fabric. Paired with the blonde oak, the result is elegant and timeless, an aesthetic that can easily complement any style. Danish furniture maker Fredericia Stolefabrik was founded in 1911 by N. P. Ravnsø in an industrial port town of the same name. From the start, Ravnsø built Fredericia's reputation on quality and hired only the most skilled craftsmen he could find. In 1955, the Ravnsø family sold Fredericia to Andreas Graversen, whose first order of business would be to hire Børge Mogensen as head of design. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The mattress has been reupholstered recently in a premium fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information.
