Danish Cord and Beech Rocking Chair, Denmark, 1940s
Located in Utrecht, NL
A beech rocking chair, suspended in seat and back with woven paper cord. Twisted paper cord woven across an open wood frame has been used to form the seats of Danish chairs since the 1940s but through the 1950s and 1960s paper cord became perhaps the most distinctive and, for some people, the type of seat most closely associated with chairs from the Danish Modern period.
When thinking about custom, sustainable, or heirloom quality furniture, the materials used are as important as the design itself. One material that is often vastly underrated is Danish cord...

Oak “Jugend” Rocking Chair, Europe, circa 1920s
Located in Utrecht, NL
This rocking chair is a special piece of the H. Collection, for as it shows early implications of Modernism while still keeping the quintessential characteristics of the Jugendstil.
Art Nouveau, known in different languages by different names, such as “Jugendstil” (Youth Style) in German or “Jugend” for short. In Denmark, it is known as Skønvirke ("Work of beauty") and this oak rocking chair shows where the naming drew inspiration from. This rocking chair has both an artistic and geometric form which is characteristic of the movement’s later years. This chair recalls the ‘Arts & Crafts movement’ and the ‘Mission Style’ as it is very sturdy with quality craftsmanship, which is apparent in the Tenon joinery. At the same time, it doesn't compromise on the aesthetics, keeping the delicate Art Nouveau details, such as the shape of the back- and armrests which show beautiful handiwork. The shard-like back’s vertical slats are wider than later models’, making this rocking chair’s look unique. The aesthetics are further elevated by the seat, which is upholstered in a soft, premium fabric.
The Art Nouveau emerged as a counter-movement to the historicism of the 19th century and was an expression of the Avant Garde, the 'New Modernism', which opposed the overloaded style of the ‘New Baroque’ with new forms for all areas of art and life. The ideal of designers of the Jugendstil was to make a house a complete work of art, with everything inside, from the furniture to the dish ware, in perfect harmony. With this ideal in mind, they established their own workshops to produce furniture. Rocking chairs like this were especially popular in Denmark, where Hans Wegner’s upholstered models prevailed.
Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair has been reupholstered recently in premium fabric.
Dimensions:
29.52 in W x 30.31 in D x 35.82 in, seat height 19.68 in
