Who the most famous chair designer is may refer to many different people. Arne Jacobsen, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Philippe Starck, Hans Wegner, Verner Panton and Le Corbusier have all designed iconic chairs over time. Shop a selection of antique, vintage and modern chairs on 1stDibs.

Philippe Starck's most famous design is arguably the Louis Ghost chair. Starck introduced the design for Kartell in 2002, and it became an instant icon. Now, it's easily one of the most recognized (and copied) designs in the world. The Louis Ghost chair is a postmodern take on the classic Louis XVI armchair, a style that emerged under the tumultuous reign of King Louis-Auguste and Queen Marie Antoinette. The second half of the chair's name refers to its materiality. It wasn't Starck's first plastic chair for Kartell, but it was the first time a single polycarbonate plastic mold was used in the process, creating a structure completely free of joints. Formally, Starck distilled the geometry of his antique reference to its main elements: the oval-shaped backrest, curved armrests and straight legs, creating a piece that has remained popular for more than 20 years. On 1stDibs, find a collection of Philippe Starck furniture.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 25, 2024
Luigi Colani's most famous design is arguably the Pegasus grand piano, which he created for Schimmel. He also created cars for many makers, including BMW, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Volkswagen. Less famously but no less impressively, Colani designed furniture, tableware and decorative objects. On 1stDibs, shop a range of Luigi Colani pieces.

Which William Morris designs are the most famous is open for debate. However, some patterns of William Morris wallpaper have consistently remained in style since their debut in the 19th century. They include Larkspur, Jasmine, Marigold, Wreath, Willow Boughs, Acanthus, Strawberry Thief and Chrysanthemum. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of William Morris furniture and decorative objects.

Some of Raymond Loewy's most famous designs include the packaging for Lucky Strike cigarettes and the Coca-Cola bottle. His 1934 Sears Coldspot refrigerator was a sleek innovation that broke sales records. His Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive, resembling a speeding bullet, was the darling of the 1939 World's Fair. Loewy even reworked shapes for snacks at Nabisco. Loewy also worked with Studebaker for decades, designing acclaimed vehicles like the 1953 Starliner coupe and the Avanti. He designed the interiors for NASA's Skylab space station, the Concorde supersonic jet and Air Force One. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Raymond Loewy furniture.

Famous fashion designers in the 1990s include Vivienne Westwood, Miuccia Prada, Jean Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler

For collectors and fashion lovers all over the world, ‘90s fashion has become associated with styles adopted by today’s supermodels and influencers, who never wear the same thing twice. And because fast fashion didn’t yet exist, 1990s fashion trends and apparel — vintage '90s clothing, handbags and accessories — have a quality appreciated by the millennial generation: authenticity.
