From April 24 through 26, Los Angeles’s Culver City plays host to a vast collection of iconic 20th-century furniture, art, jewelry and decorative objects offered at yet another edition of the Los Angeles Modernism Show. With dozens of dealers exhibiting at the much-anticipated annual event — attended in past years by such celebrities as Courtney Cox, Julie Bowen and Ted Danson and design aficionados like Kelly Wearstler and Cliff Fong — this year’s iteration presents no shortage of chic vintage finds.
Missing the fair? Not to worry: Our editors’ selection from exhibiting 1stdibs galleries serves as both inspiration for the home and a visual encyclopedia of Modernism’s international mark. Included below: Early modern classics from the Art Deco period as well as selections from Georg Jensen’s prolific career in silverwork; Mid-century American and Scandinavian staples by the likes of McCobb, Henningsen, Parzinger, Platner, Noguchi and Baughman; and Brutalist signatures in brass and welded metal; plus outdoor decor, decorative glass and fine jewelry. Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1]
After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...

Dorothy King was born and lived in London in 1907. She studied at the Hornsey School of Art under JC Moody, then briefly at the Slade School of Fine Art with Randolph Schwabe. She took up painting professionally after the war and in 1947 was elected to the RBA. In 1959 she was a temporary keeper of its galleries in Suffolk Street and then, from 1961-1974, was a keeper of the South London Art Gallery.
Dorothy King’s paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New English Arts Club and elsewhere in the U.K. and her work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York. A memorial show was held at the Mall Galleries in 1992 after her death in 1990.

The artwork represents a portrait of a woman through confident strokes by bright and harmonic colors. Leonor Fini (1907-1966) was an emblematic painter, illustrator, writer, scene painter and draftswoman; one of her favorite subjects was human bodies painted with hybrid shapes, as animals, plants or minerals. Her subjects are neither naked nor dressed, their body is crossed by nervous tissues, veins and blood vessels.
