George III Period Oval Mahogany Wine Cooler

An oval mahogany wine cooler, George III period, circa 1790.
With excellent, unrestored, deep, rich color and patination, and original solid-brass carrying handles to either side.
This smart Georgian wine cooler (cellaret or cellarette) retains its original waxed surface and patina.
It is brass-bound (of coopered construction) supported on its separate, original stand. Raised on square tapering legs terminating in its original brass cappings and castors.
It can be also used as a small side table or lamp table. Comes with a bespoke, clear, safety glass cover.
Nb.
An antique oval wine cooler of this design is quite rare, and makes a very elegant addition to a dining room sideboard, or an occasional table in a drawing room.
By removing the top, some examples of this form of wine cooler were often later converted to be used as jardinières.

“In late Georgian times the wine cooler was generally a plain mahogany tub hooped with brass and standing on four legs. Mary Kenyon in a letter to her mother (October 30th 1775) wrote that among the furniture in the parlour of her new house in Lincoln’s Inn Fields was a ''handsome cistern of mahogany with brass hoops etc. under the sideboard”.

Kitchin, Thomas (1718 - 1784)
Thomas Kitchin (August 4, 1718 – June 23, 1784) was a London based engraver, cartographer, and publisher. He was born in London to a hat-dyer of the same name. At 14, Kitchin apprenticed under Emanuel Bowen, under whom he mastered the art of engraving. He married Bowen daughter, Sarah Bowen, and later inherited much of his preceptor's prosperous business. Their son, Thomas Bowen Kitchin, also an engraver joined the family business, which thereafter published in Thomas Kitchin and Son. From 1858 or so Kitchin was the engraver to the Duke of York, and from about 1773 acquired the title, 'Royal Hydrographer to King George III.' He is responsible for numerous maps published in the The Star, Gentleman's Magazine, and London Magazine, as well as partnering with, at various times, with Thomas Jefferys, Emmanuel Bowen, Thomas Hinton, Issac Tayor, Andrew Dury, John Rocque, Louis de la Rochette, and Alexander Hogg, among others. MAKER Nicolas de Fer 1646-1720
The French cartographer and engraver, Nicolas de Fer, was a master at creating maps that were works of art. The maps that he published were printed during the Baroque period when the decorative arts were characterized by ornate detail. De Fer’s detailed maps and atlases were valued more for their decorative content than their geographical accuracy.
Nicolas de Fer was born in 1646. His father, Antoine de Fer, owned a mapmaking firm. At the age of twelve, Nicolas was apprenticed to a Parisian engraver named Louis Spirinx. The family business was starting to decline when his father died in 1673. Nicolas de Fer’s mother, Genevieve, took over the business after the death of her husband. Very elegant center dressing table, curved on all sides in rosewood veneer.
The top opens with a central shutter provided on the back of its mercury mirror and flanked by two shutters.
They unmask two removable lockers also in rosewood veneer.
The belt opens with four drawers, one of which is narrower, they are centered by a sliding writing tablet.
She poses on four high, pinched and arched feet.
A beautiful openwork and foliage fall in chiseled and gilded bronze terminated by a small sheathing shoe, accentuates the slight curve of the front and rear feet.
Fine ornamentation of chiseled and gilded bronzes such as offcuts, clogs, keyholes, as well as fine original brass hinges discreetly adorn this piece representative of small pieces of furniture born under the reign of Louis XV.
