(after) Salvador Dali Abstract Prints
Spanish, 1904-1989
Salvador Dali (1904 – 1989) was a Spanish surrealist artist renowned for his technical skill, precise draftsmanship and the striking and bizarre images in his work.
Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Dali received his formal education in fine arts in Madrid. Influenced by Impressionism and the Renaissance masters from a young age, he became increasingly attracted to Cubism and avant-garde movements. He moved closer to Surrealism in the late 1920s and joined the Surrealist group in 1929, soon becoming one of its leading exponents. His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in August 1931, and is one of the most famous Surrealist paintings. Dali lived in France throughout the Spanish Civil War (1936 to 1939) before leaving for the United States in 1940 where he achieved commercial success. He returned to Spain in 1948 where he developed his "nuclear mysticism" style, based on his interest in classicism, mysticism and recent scientific developments.
Dali's artistic repertoire included painting, graphic arts, film, sculpture, design and photography, at times in collaboration with other artists. He also wrote fiction, poetry, autobiography, essays and criticism. Major themes in his work include dreams, the subconscious, sexuality, religion, science and his closest personal relationships. Some trends in Dali's work that would continue throughout his life were already evident in the 1920s. Dali was influenced by many styles of art, ranging from the most academically classic, to the most cutting-edge avant-garde. His classical influences included Raphael, Bronzino, Francisco de Zurbaran, Vermeer and Velazquez. Exhibitions of his works attracted much attention and a mixture of praise and puzzled debate from criticto

About the Artist: Wifredo Lam was an Afro-Cuban artist best known for his unique Surrealist aesthetic that combined European artistic movements with the imagery of his native country. “I responded always to the presence of factors that emanated from our history and our geography, tropical flowers, and black culture,” Lam once said. In one of his most famous paintings, The Jungle (1943), these various influences are melded together, onto a single large-scale canvas. Born Wifredo Oscar de la Concepción Lam y Castilla on December 8, 1902 in Sagua la Grande, Cuba, the painter moved to Madrid, Spain in 1923 to study with Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor, who had been the teacher of famed Surrealist Salvador Dalí. Lam moved to Paris after seeing an exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s work in Spain. Having arrived in Paris, he introduced himself to Picasso who subsequently showed Lam his collection of primitive artworks...

Dali Colored Woodcut Engraving "Diviners and Sorcerers" from The Divine Comedy
By (after) Salvador Dali
Located in Alamo, CA
A colored woodcut engraving "Diviners and Sorcerers" from Dante's "The Divine Comedy" by Salvador Dali. It is from the first edition printed on BFK Rives paper, published 1960-64 by Editions d'Art Les Hueres Claires, Paris France. It includes a certificate of authenticity.
History of the project: In 1950, to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the birth of Dante, the Italian government commissioned Salvador Dalí to illustrate one of the most important works of Italian literature, Dante’s “Divine Comedy". Libreria dello Stato Italiano (The National Library of Italy) signed a contract with Dalí for him to illustrate the work. To allow Dalí, a Spanish Surrealist artist, to be the one to illustrate “The Divine Comedy”, one of the greatest symbols of the country, was according to some in government, a crime against the state and the project was cancelled. Dalí, however, was enthralled by the work of Dante and was also already deeply immersed in the project. He had created 34 watercolors illustrating Inferno, 33 illustrating Purgatory, and 33 illustrating Paradise. He decided to offer the project to the French publisher, Joseph Forêt. In 1959, Forêt’s company, Editions d’art Les Heures Claires, the well-known publisher of limited-edition books illustrated with fine art, agreed to undertake the project and proceeded to purchase Dalí’s watercolors...
