Alessandro Mendini More Furniture and Collectibles

Italian, 1931-2019

Alessandro Mendini was born in Milan in 1931. Through his work as an architect, designer, journalist, theorist and publisher, Mendini helped establish the Italian design sensibility on a global scale with a particular focus on neo-modern, avant-garde design as well as the crossover between art, design and architecture.

Mendini’s influential work spanned the arenas of graphics, furniture, interiors, architecture, stage design, writing and painting. He graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1959, and he began his career at the studio of artist-designer Marcello Nizzoli. He went on to become the publisher of the popular magazines Casabella (1970–76), Modo and Domus (each 1979–85).

In 1979, Mendini joined Ettore Sottsass and Michele de Lucchi as a partner at Studio Alchimia, a harbinger of the Memphis Group before he cofounded Domus Academy in 1982. In 1989, he and his brother Francesco established their architectural practice, Atelier Mendini, in Milan, where he worked until his death in February 2019. In recognition of his outstanding body of work, Mendini was awarded the Compasso d’Oro twice, in 1979 and 1981. He was also honored by the Architectural League of New York, made Chevalier des Arts et Lettres in France, and, in 2014, he was awarded the European Prize for Architecture.

Mendini’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, among others.

Vitra Miniature Lassu Chair by Alessandro Mendini, Germany, 1990
By Vitra, Alessandro Mendini
Located in Amsterdam, NL
A unique miniature of the Lassu' chair by Alessandro Mendini, manufactured by Vitra in Germany around 1990. This very rare piece is a limited edition: only 250 were made for Vitra's miniature collection. It is made of high quality bronze, giving it a beautiful style. This is a miniature version of the Lassu´ (which means (being / going) up there) chair, which is one of the objects for spirituality which Alessandro Mendini presented when calling for a guerilla war on the world of functionalism. The archetypal chair rests on a slanted pyramid, which makes it difficult to sit down on. But once you would sit on it, it would give you a new and different view of things. As a happening the original chair was placed in the middle of an open field, doused with gasoline and set on fire. The fire not only symbolized the act of liberation, but also the transitory nature of the object and its message. This tiny replica is a beautiful piece of art to honour this piece of design history. It remains in good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. About the designer: Few people have been as instrumental in promoting avant-garde Italian design as Alessandro Mendini. The architect, designer, journalist, poet, and educator is best known for his holistic postmodern approach, freely combining elements from various cultures and time periods, while mixing the highbrow with kitsch. His acclaimed projects include the multicolored masterpiece that is the Groninger Museum and his iconic Proust chair...
