Studies: 1921-25 Art Academy, Vienna; Dresden Academy. ALlweil brought with him the high values of the Central European avant-garde, which he had absorbed during his years of study in Vienna. He joined the ‘Kunstschau’ group- of artists that had formed around Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. He exhibited with them in the 1920’s, and emigrated to Palestine in 1926. He was one of the founders of the Tel Aviv Art Museum and the Midrasha Art Teachers College in Israel. As opposed to other modern Israeli artists in his period, Allweil's woodcuts and illustrations pertained to contemporary events such as the Holocaust and the pioneering spirit before the establishment of the State of Israel. Most notable is this work as well as the first illustrated Passover Haggada for the IDF which he made in 1950 and which was printed for 3 years with his inspirational woodcut illustrations. He published a series of linoleum cuts of Israeli and Biblical subjects and created large scale murals of the Holocaust. Teaching: In Israel, art. Prizes: Received Dizengoff Prize twice; 1955 Turov Prize for Bible Illustrations. Published series of linoleum cuts of Israeli and Biblical subjects, also illustrated a Passover Haggada and large scale murals of Holocaust. "Paper Making" WPA Industrial Mid-Century American Scene Social Realism Workers Douglas Crockwell (1904-1968) "Paper Making" 19 x 39 inches Oil on board, c. 1936 Signed verso Framed: 28 x 47 Provenance: Estate of the Artist BIO Spencer Douglass Crockwell was born into a comfortable middle class household on April 29, 1904 in Columbus, Ohio. His father, Charles Roland Crockwell, was a mining engineer; his mother, Cora, was the daughter of an Iowa attorney. He became a commercial artist and experimental filmmaker who spent a good part of his career creating illustrations and advertisements for the Saturday Evening Post. In 1907 the Crockwell family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he graduated from high school and then attended from Washington University. Initially he studied engineering, but soon switched to business. While still an undergraduate, Crockwell took courses at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and quickly realized that he wanted to be an artist. After graduating from Washington University in 1926, Crockwell continued to study at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts until 1929. The following year he relocated to Chicago and continued his studies at the American Academy of Art. In 1930 and 1931 he studied in Europe on a Traveling Fellowship. In 1932 Douglass Crockwell moved to Glens Falls, New York, which was to be his home for the remainder of his life. The following year he married Margaret Braman. They had three children, a son Douglass and two daughters, Johanna and Margaret. During the depression he created murals and posters for the Works Progress Administration including Post Office murals in White River junction, Vermont; Endicott, New York; and Macon, Mississippi. In 1934 he painted Paper Workers, Finch Pruyn & Co. (the leading Glens Falls, New York company) for the WPA. In the 1930s Crockwell developed an interest in experimental animated films that occupied him for the rest of his life. In 1936 and 1937, he collaborated with David Smith, a sculptor, to create surrealist films. Because of his interest in experimental films, his output of paintings was limited to just twenty to forty illustrations a year during this time. Crockwell painted his first of many Saturday Evening Post cover in 1933. ABOUT THE PAINTING This painting is from the collection of Barbara and Frank Sinatra, dated December 21, 1945 (just nine days after Frank Sinatra’s 30th birthday), and depicts the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Culver City backlot during the filming of Till the Clouds Roll By, the direction of the film having been taking over by Richard Whorf in December 1945. It is not presently clear if Whorf gave the Sinatras this painting as a gift, as the presence of the Dalzell Hatfield Galleries label on the verso indicates the painting may have been sourced there. Frank and Nancy Sinatra acquired a number of works from Dalzell Hatfield Galleries during the 1940’s, or perhaps they framed it for the couple. Sinatra performed “Old Man River’ in the film. Sinatra and June Allyson are depicted in the center of the painting. PROVENANCE From the Estate of Mrs. Nancy Sinatra; Dalzell Hatfield Galleries, Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles. An image of the Dalzell Hatfield label and the back of the original frame (which we replaced with a stunning Heydenrk frame) are attached. Nancy Sinatra was Fran's first wife. Nancy Rose Barbato was 17 years old when she met Frank Sinatra, an 18-year-old singer from Hoboken, on the Jersey Shore in the summer of 1934. They married in 1939 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Jersey City where Frank gave Nancy a recording of a song dedicated to her titled "Our Love" as a wedding present. The young newlyweds lived and worked in New Jersey, where Frank worked as an unknown singing waiter and master of ceremonies at the Rustic Cabin while Nancy worked as a secretary at the American Type Founders. His musical career took off after singing with big band leaders Harry James and Tommy Dorsey...

ARIEH ALLWEIL [ARIE ALWEIL] 1901-1967 Galicia 1901-1967 Safed, Israel (Ukranian/Polish/Israeli) Arieh Allweil, born 1901, Galicia. Immigrated to Palestine in1920. Studies: 1921-25 Art Academy, Vienna; Dresden Academy. ALlweil brought with him the high values of the Central European avant-garde, which he had absorbed during his years of study in Vienna. He joined the ‘Kunstschau’ group- of artists that had formed around Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. He exhibited with them in the 1920’s, and emigrated to Palestine in 1926. He was one of the founders of the Tel Aviv Art Museum and the Midrasha Art Teachers College in Israel. As opposed to other modern Israeli artists in his period, Allweil's woodcuts and illustrations pertained to contemporary events such as the Holocaust and the pioneering spirit before the establishment of the State of Israel.
